The year of 2024 brought so many fun professional projects, interesting challenges and new opportunities for the Medway Group. None of it would have been possible without the insight, support and ideas from clients, colleagues, mentors and friends. For that, I'm very grateful! Of course, year-end always prompts reflections on lessons learned and the chance to set some 2025 intentions. Sharing a few below (link to full post in comments): 1 – I’m a bigger believer than ever in the importance of honing speaking and writing skills – even when they’re not part of your official job description. This belief led me to carve out a line of training targeted specifically to professionals who don’t necessarily write or do presentations as part of their daily work. More details coming about this in 2025. 2 – While I still abide by my dad’s advice that “you’ve got to plan the work before you can work the plan,” I’ve learned sometimes it’s OK to veer from the plan or even change the plan – as long as it’s done with intention and thought. 3 – Every opportunity that comes to the Medway Group won’t necessarily be a good fit. I’m becoming better at discerning what’s a good fit for our expertise. An old friend told me years ago that his business wasn’t for everyone. I finally understand what he meant. 4 – I’ve long believed that the best storytelling comes from overlaying well-told narratives with accurate and well-researched data. In 2024, I was able to help several organizations move from a “look at me, look at me” approach to media relations or advocacy to a data-driven, story-telling approach that connects people and ideas by communicating an authentic voice through the written and spoken word. 5 – The rapid onslaught of artificial intelligence has reminded me that no one can stop learning. Re-engaging in professional organizations, intentionally networking with colleagues, staying on top of trends and remaining open to changing ways of doing things have kept me learning, growing and asking lots of questions. 6 – The most valuable feedback I’ve gotten from writing and speaker coaching this year has been the positive response to one of the first comments I always make. I start with the disclaimer that “I don’t have all the answers.” Writing and speaking are such subjective topics, and I like to acknowledge that age, gender, education level, geography and culture all impact how we speak and write. I encourage people to challenge what I’m teaching and, in the process, I’ve learned far more than I would have just putting “rules” of speaking or writing out there. Plus, this interaction makes every session far more fun for me and the people I’m working with (see how I broke a grammar rule here and ended a sentence with a preposition 😊). This was such a fun exercise! I love seeing everyone's workspaces, they really do reflect our personalities. I cheated, though. We are in the middle of selling our house so my space is much less cluttered than usual. I'm often asked how Fractional Law Firm CMO functions with everyone working remotely. Do I like it? Does our team feel connected? Our team spans 3 states and is growing. We stay connected using MSTeams.link and Asana and Zoom and other tools. I feel as productive and connected - perhaps even more so - than I did going into an office every day. #workingfromhome is not just about getting the laundry done, doing the dishes, going for a run, and picking up the kids (on time!!) - those are all great things, no doubt. But being able to DO those things? On YOUR time? With flexibility? That is the real benefit. ⏳More time = Less stress At the end of the day, time is the most valuable commodity.
