Cities are designed in a way that accommodates sidewalks, safer bike lanes, physical activities, and recreation areas that inspire people to make healthier choices and live good lives. Our built environment gives us chances to improve public health and grow active living. Thus, creating many open spaces in cities not only adds natural beauty to urban areas but can also increase the health and well-being of their citizens. Early city planners knew that open spaces are good and give benefits for large interactions and for social cooperation while supporting community health and well-being. We were honored to collaborate with the World Urban Campaign by UN-Habitat and Birmingham City University for the UN-Habitat Urban Thinkers Campus 2024 event, Towards an International Landscape Convention (ILC). This event is a key part of a global initiative to create an ILC, inspired by the success of the European Landscape Convention (ELC). Led by Kathryn Moore, IFLA past president, this movement has gained momentum over the past decade, bringing together academics, institutions, and individuals to expand the ELC’s vision on a global scale. The discussions followed a two-fold approach: 1. Engaging global organizations, academics, and professionals in conceptualizing the ILC. While it will take many more events to draft this convention, the momentum is building!  2. Exploring real-world examples through the West Midlands National Park as a case study, testing cross-sectoral policy drivers, challenges, and opportunities. See the report: https://lnkd.in/gUhRkdid The report currently evaluates three dozen cities, assigning a comparative score between 0 and 10 across three key categories: tall buildings, density, and livability. These scores are derived from a comprehensive analysis of diverse metrics, including: 🔹Geographic dispersion; 🔹High-rise/density correlation; 🔹Urbanized population (% of national total); 🔹Social benchmarks, including life expectancy and educational attainment; 🔹Environmental data, such as urban sprawl, air quality (PM2.5 exposure), and access to rapid transit and public spaces; and 🔹Economic metrics, among numerous others. Exciting Moment in My Career! I had the incredible opportunity to meet Jeff Speck at the Congress for the New Urbanism conference, the author who inspired my journey into urban planning with his groundbreaking book, “Walkable City.” When I first read “Walkable City” upon its publication, it ignited a passion within me for creating livable, walkable urban spaces. Today, I am proud to be an urban planner and a professor, shaping future planners and policymakers with the same vision and passion (and of course, assigning “Walkable City” to my students).
