As baseball season is in full swing, we’re getting ready to put final touches on our film “Bochy et les Bleus”.  The little known story of when legendary manager Bruce Bochy came out of retirement from Major League Baseball to train the French national team - a group of perennial underdogs hoping to change their fate and qualify for the World Baseball Classics. The experience marked a moment of reflection for Bochy - who went back to coaching, defying doubts and winning the World Series with the Texas Rangers - and growth for the players, who took inspiration from Bruce to reimagine their careers.  Two years in the making - working with amazing partners - we are heading towards completion of the film.  After months of planning we are approaching the last tranche of shooting, in Paris and Toulouse - which will help us fill in some of the story gaps emerged during post-production. Here’s some of the Documentary film making lessons I was reminded of during this experience! True access is more than just “permission to film”. 👍 You need engaged subjects who are invested in the film as much as you are and have a good understanding of what the filmmakers need for the process to be successful.  You need to know what is happening as it unfolds so as to be able to catch conversations and moments of gravitas in real time. Have a story structure in place 🏗 Documentaries are about observation & using units of real life to construct a story. You should be open and reactive but it’s not enough to “drop in” on a situation and just capture stuff. You can get lost without a clear idea of your story beats.  Set a clear creative vision 🖼 Be demanding of yourself and your team. Don’t assume that a great story or subject matter will be enough to make a great film. Discuss style, mood, look and feel. Develop references & mood boards, talk insistently about editing style, music, cinematography. Check the rights 📜 When you start a project, make sure you check what rights are needed and any agreements that exist between the parties involved. Be forensic about it, ask a lot of questions. Sometimes things get missed, which may prove complicated to resolve down the line.  Refine your budget 💷   Never guesstimate & plan for contingency. Travel & sustenance always cost more than you think!  Keep a detailed cost report, each step of the way - this will help you stay on budget. Don’t forget Post-production! Plan for post 🖥 It’s easy to have a mentality of “let’s get it shot, then worry about the edit”. This never works and makes projects longer than they need to be and tricky to manage. Documentaries take time ⏳ Even if a story takes place around a specific event, don’t assume the time it takes to finish the film will be limited to that point in time. The answer: create a stop-motion film where life-long Liverpool FC fans Proudly demonstrate their love for their club By opting to be permanently inked (as the cool kids say) The moving image football sequence was created by inking 57 tattoos and then photographing them in sequence to create a stop-motion animation in which every single frame has been individually tattooed onto the skin of a real Liverpool fan. The campaign is part of the global Carlsberg x Liverpool FC brand platform ‘Forever Fans’ which celebrates fans’ unwavering loyalty to the club throughout the years. Also I got featured in the DVD Bonus Content for the first time. My 2 seconds of fame. 😁 Fun story- I was casually watching YouTube videos on a lazy weekend when I searched for a movie I had worked on 2 years back called #Strays in MPC Adelaide (a fun project and the best team ever), and this is what I found. Of all the crazy shots this was one where these squirrels were wrestling (obviously) a lot of animators had an eye on. Isn't it Matthew? 😉 but I got to work on it. I remember people standing behind my back and wanting me to take a playbast every time I would work on it which was a little annoying (you know it animators) so I would sometimes stay back and work on it when there was no one around. In order to make it believable I had to look for references (I don't know what people would have thought of me if they would have seen my search history back then) and we successfully found some real life evidence. And we also shot a reference (for educational purposes only Leonardo, Shashank). Overall it was such an amazing project to work on and the team was super awesome. Production, leads, animation director and the team (not tagging anyone but you know you are the best). Among the best times of my professional career. This is an experience that I will cherish all my life. If you haven't watched the movie Strays go watch it but not with your kids.

Dune is one of my favorite movies. Beautiful cinematography and a story that grabs you. There are some unique parallels with business and Dune. Check them out: 1) Just as House Atreides prepares for their stewardship of the desert planet Arrakis, businesses must plan strategically for new ventures or market shifts. A clear vision and well-thought-out strategies are essential for navigating complex environments. 2) Arrakis is the only source of the universe's most valuable resource, spice Melange. Similarly, effective management of a company's unique resources (like intellectual property or skilled personnel) can create a competitive advantage and drive long-term success. 3) Paul Atreides' effort to understand and integrate with the Fremen illustrates the importance of respecting and adapting to local cultures and practices, especially when expanding into new markets or regions. 4) Leadership is a central theme in "Dune," highlighting the importance of trust and influence over sheer power. Building genuine relationships and inspiring others can lead to more sustainable leadership. And if you haven't seen it. Dune Part Two is out and it is AMAZING!
