When people think of 'adaptive re-use' they don't always have in their minds, in my view, the scale of ambition and transformation of a project like this. This Grimshaw designed scheme is the 'adaptive-reuse' of large airfield hangars into a cultural and leisure hub, with big capacity for concerts, events and theatre, linked to new infrastructure for the innovation economy and start-ups. New housing is part of the overall development programme though not this specific proposal. This project will create a destination of very real significance for the city - and support the local innovation economy. The main hangar will house a 17,000 capacity arena, the third largest in the UK and exhibition and leisure space all under one roof. The east hangar will house a festival hall for conventions and exhibitions and the west one provides a hub space for small, start-up creative enterprises, complete with leisure facilities, food and drink outlets. A big transformation adapting existing buildings and infrastructure. Adaptive re-use comes in many shapes and sizes....I used to work near this place and as you know have a background in large scale urban regeneration, and have always thought this site was prime for an ambitious mixed use development. This project is a key part of that larger renewal program by developers YTL Developments (UK) Limited. I think given the lack of big area transformations in the UK since the Crash that this overall development programme has even greater significance as a catalyst not just for the region but for new ambition around area renewal projects. #urban #regeneration #regenerativedesign Andrew ThomasMark Middleton
