Yesterday, I published a comprehensive analysis on how elections would look different this year if the Freedom to Vote Act has passed in 2022. I worked for years on this legislation in the Senate and it was incredibly difficult to watch from the floor as the bill was blocked by the filibuster. This report aims to show the transformative impact the legislation would have had for voters and our democracy and why it continues to be critical for Congress to pass the bill. Some highlights: 8 million more eligible Americans would have likely newly registered to vote through AVR, and 3.8 million more voters would have likely cast a ballot this November-- that is more than the population of 22 states.

Five ways technology contributed to unexpected success in national elections: The year 2024 is perhaps "THE election year." Globally, more voters than ever head to polls in at least 64 countries this year. National elections in Pakistan were held during early Feb. As results came in, it was evident that myriad efforts to block ex PM Imran Khan, who is currently in jail, and his Pakistan Tehreeke Insaaf (PTI) party fell way short on election day, as PTI emerged the most successful party. Here are 5 novel ways PTI’s "technology and digital media strategy" paved way for its "unexpected success" despite hardships and limited resources. Valuable lessons for "more progressive" political parties competing in elections in countries with large young populations. Also, quite relevant for corporate sector.

Latest blog from me reflecting on #mayoral #elections and the challenge for all us policy watchers and politicians, improving voter turnout, interest and trust that your vote makes a difference.
"Voter apathy affects turnout, and if people can’t see the point or lack interest in the election they don’t vote. It is also affected by many issues from other elections to the weather, but this is the first set of mayoral elections which have happened against a backdrop of party in power having high levels of negative ratings." 💬 Associate Professor Rebecca Riley from City-REDI, University of Birmingham explores 'apathy, allegiance, and anger: the mayoral elections against a backdrop of voter turmoil' for the College of Social Sciences blog ⬇ https://lnkd.in/gPNWxYmH

[140/365] Unsung heroes With all the speculation and excitement about the next General Election, which must be held by November 2025 (https://lnkd.in/gxBpv7ne), here's a shoutout to fellow public servants who are working quietly and meticulously to ensure elections run smoothly, transparently and freely. When the next General Elections come around, it is my hope that the public remember: 1️⃣ Public servants serve the people and the government of the day, not the ruling political party. 2️⃣ Public servants are law-bound to conduct elections in strict confidence. 3️⃣ Public servants are duty-bound to serve with Integrity, Service and Excellence (https://lnkd.in/g62yh2AS). As fellow Singaporeans, we can treat our public servants with civility, when we cast our votes for the candidate(s) whom we believe best represent our values and interests.

“Turnout in US local government elections is startlingly low, often less than 20%.” While federal and state races garner the most media attention, most elections in the United States are for offices in local government, and while there are documented racial, economic, and age gaps in federal elections, the disparities in local elections are significantly larger. Professor Christopher Berry from the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago explains why syncing local elections to coincide with higher-level elections increases turnout and produces a more representative set of voters, in the third instalment of our Democracy Reform Primer Series 💡 Read more or download the primer 👉🏼 https://lnkd.in/ekJPJmMB #democracy #reform #primers #elections
