TYPSA group will design the first high-speed railway in the USA The California High-Speed Rail Authority has chosen the SYSTRA/TYPSA #JointVenture to carry out design services for #track and #electrification of the high-speed line connecting #Merced and #Bakersfield, #California. This 171-mile (275 km) stretch is part of the first high-speed #railway in the #USA, connecting the main towns of California. The #Authority is responsible for #planning, #designing, #building, and operating the first #highspeed rail system in the nation, and aims to complete construction and begin functionality testing on the first segment between Madera and Poplar Avenue by the end of 2028, and begin operations on the Merced-Fresno-Bakersfield segment between 2030 and 2033. The initial 119-mile (191 km) section is currently under construction and is a crucial part of these goals, as it will serve as the test track, necessary for certification from the Federal Railroad Administration. The #SYSTRA/ #TYPSA Joint Venture will provide design services for the track and Overhead Contact Systems (#OCS) for the section, including the design of the entire track and OCS network, along-track cable containment, access walkways, drainage systems, and fencing. SYSTRA/TYPSA will collaborate intensively with the future track and OCS construction contractor, during the design phase and during construction, as well as with other interfacing contractors (#trainsets, #tractionpower, #signaling and communications #contractors) to ensure the system as a whole is integrated. The scope of work will be delivered in phases, and detailed through subsequent Task Orders issued by Authority staff for work that include:   Preparation of the design and support during construction of the track system and OCS, together with the other abovementioned elements, on the Merced-Bakersfield stretch.  Managing #technical and #nontechnical interfaces with contractors and consultants in areas of civil engineering, track systems and OCS construction, #MEP facilities, #stationdesign and other relevant systems. The contract will ensure compliance of the support track and OCS elements with the Authority’s Reliability Availability Maintainability (#RAM) Management Plan, and the implementation of the Building Information Modelling (#BIM) system for the development of the initial digital model of the entire rail system, stations, operations centre, and maintenance facilities. In accordance with current legislation in California, SYSTRA/TYPSA has partnered with 19 small local businesses who will participate in this contract, including disadvantaged sectors and diversity represented groups, such as veterans, disabled and LGBTBE. NEW RELEASE: 2nd Edition of the Lower Order Road Design Guideline The Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia, Queensland Northern Territory (IPWEA-QNT) is proud to announce the release of the 2nd Edition of our Lower Order Road Design Guideline. The First Edition of the Lower Order Road Design Guideline was released in 2016 and has been extremely popular and widely adopted by the public works civil engineering sector across Queensland and beyond. The lower order road network is estimated at over 70% of the Queensland Local Government road network and also represents a significant portion of the State Government road network. This Guideline has been developed to help provide more cost-effective design solutions for lower order roads. In the Second Edition we now provide guidance for traffic volumes up to 250 vehicles per day and design speeds up to 110km/hr. There are numerous other topics that have been included in this edition based on feedback and requests from our Review Committee. IPWEA-QNT is indebted to the tireless efforts of our Review Committee in particularly to Tony Gallagher (Chair) and Rodney Moss of Harrison Infrastructure Group. Cowi signed to design works on Victorian tunnels for Transpennine Route Upgrade COWI has signed a #contract with Network Rail to design tunnelling works to three Victorian era tunnels as part of the The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU). The works will include preparing the three #tunnels, built by the #Victorians, #Stalybridgetunnel, #Scouttunnel and #Standedgetunnel, to be able to accommodate W12 #freight gauge clearance and #electrification of the line. These works will take place between #Stalybridge and #Huddersfield, a section of the wider #TRU scheme, which is being delivered to bring improvements to the #railways across the Pennines and between #Manchester, Huddersfield, #Leeds and #York. As part of its new contract, #Cowi will develop #engineering solutions to conduct the works on the route while ensuring minimal #impact is inflicted on local #communities and existing #transport routes. To facilitate the work, Cowi will also have to include 1.7km of track slab installation within its designs to allow for the track to be lowered to allow larger freight #trains to pass through. The #contractor will also be delivering off track #drainage and #geotechnical work. Providing #specialist teams, the geotechnical work will focus on #retaining walls and #earthwork stability while the off- track drainage enhancements will increase #flood resilience. At the start of the year, the next phase of Huddersfield station’s redevelopment as part of TRU began. While work had already begun to improve facilities for passengers inside Huddersfield station, this next phase of work will involve work on the outside of the building. This news followed an announcement from government a further £3.9bn would be injected into TRU rail project, taking the total Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom funding to £6.9bn. The upgrade of the 122km-long rail link in the north of England was earmarked to cost £2.9bn in 2018, but the #DfT has most recently predicted it will cost between £9bn and £11.5bn. Cowi UK managing director Andy Sloan said: “We are looking forward to collaborating closely with TRU and its supply chain through its new hub and spoke model. “The work presents unique challenges due to the age of the #infrastructure, requiring a balance between #modern engineering solutions and the #preservation of #historical integrity. “Our teams have been working on the TRU project for over seven years so we are delighted to continue our involvement on this additional section of the programme."
