A professional online reading specialist and parent mentor helping homeschool and traditionally educated elementary and middle school students find relevancy and engagement in reading again.
February is Black History Month, an annual observance of African American achievements which started as Negro History Week. It was first celebrated in 1926 during the second week of February. The week coincided with the birthdays of former President Abraham Lincoln and civil rights leader Frederick Douglass and for this reason the month of February was chosen. Originating in the United States, the celebration is now observed in several countries around the world, including the United Kingdom and Ireland at different times of the year. This year marks the 98th anniversary of Black History Month celebration. Myself and many other education scholars have cited and honor Professor Emerita Rudine Sims Bishop's contribution to the body of work in children's literature. In Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop's seminal work "Mirrors, Windows, and Sliding Doors" she explains what happens when we read books. Books are MIRRORS that " transform the human experience and reflect it back to us." Books are WINDOWS "offering views of worlds that may be real or imagined familiar or strange." Books are SLIDING GLASS DOORS in which readers "have only to walk through an imagination to become part of whatever world has been created or recreated by the author." The reading of children's books, by young and old, that honor legends, leaders, and legacies in the African American community is the optimal way to celebrate Black History Month. Day 8 Mirrors, Windows, and Sliding Glass Door BHM book is : Unspeakable: The Tulsa Race Massacre Book Summary: The book traces the history of African Americans in Tulsa's Greenwood district and chronicles the devastation that occurred in 1921 when a white mob attacked the Black community. News of what happened was largely suppressed, and no official investigation occurred for seventy-five years. This picture book sensitively introduces young readers to this tragedy and concludes with a call for a better future. #books #bookshelf ##blackhistory #BlackHistoryMonth #childrenbooks #Reading #historymatters

"The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) has actually made each February extra significant during Black History Month by choosing a different theme for every single year." This year's theme is African Americans and the Arts. Check out why this theme was chosen and what previous year's themes were down below
