In 2021 during the pandemic, I earned my Associate's degree in Commercial Music from Cerritos College. There really was nothing better to do than study, which allowed me to earn highest honors and have a better shot at getting into Biola. Before going back to school in 2017, I never considered myself an academic person. It wasn't until after I had my daughter that my values changed dramatically, and I decided to take my interest in music seriously enough to be willing to grind away toward any kind of degree. I did not know how far I would get when I first started. But as I found out, the mind is a powerful thing. It adapts if you don't give up. If you just keep showing up best as you can (sometimes only on fumes), it's only natural that you will inevitably improve. Growth will always feel like a struggle until you break through to the next tier. I did not imagine I would get into a private university, and for music of all things! But that's how you know it's your passion -- because you're willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen. Finally, I'm graduating from Biola with a B.A. in Commercial music, complete with all the hands-on experience I didn't get during pandemic-caused distance learning, and a minor in Biblical Studies! Wow! I'm stoked and very grateful. There are many things I've learned about myself through this long, challenging season. One is, is that I love learning. I might return for my Master's in Theology someday soon, God willing and providing. The other is that this time has helped me get to know what I'm made of, what I'm made for, and what I'm not made for. I've got more goals. More on those to come! For now, I celebrate... mostly by sleeping for several days straight. But I look forward to the next challenge moving forward. What is your passion, whether you're actively involved or not? What makes you tick? What steps can you take to make it a bigger part of your reality?

In honor of Earth Day, we are highlighting an important chapter in the Bloomsbury Handbook of Montessori Education by my colleague Dr. Maria K. McKenna , "Montessori Education: Ecoliteracy, Sustainability, & Peace Education." See the abstract below: Maria Montessori’s vision of peace education includes a deep respect for integral human development where a focus on the whole child in the context of the larger community is the norm. Within Montessori education, children learn each part of the universe, living and non-living, play a role in the cosmic order of the world. Long before climate change became a mainstream concern and imminent threat, Montessori understood that ecoliteracy and a deep reverence for understanding how sustainability, sustainable living, respect for the environment, and a deep understanding of the means of production and exchange were essential to the development of a peaceful world. This chapter explores her philosophy of peace education, its relationship to environmental stewardship, and the implementation of these themes within the Montessori context. Music plays a crucial role in memory retention, especially when it comes to catchy tunes and repetitive lyrics or rhythms. Teachers, consider incorporating songs into your math lessons to enhance student recall. For those students who require additional support in memorizing math facts, leveraging music can be a powerful tool. Here's a blast from the past, when NBC 6 South Florida came to my school and featured us in the Brag About Your School. https://lnkd.in/de3rR4RU #MusicInEducation #MemoryRetention #MathEducation

Braingasm of today; كيف تجعل تعليمك لا يُنسى classes become memorable when filled with moments of awe and wonder, which can be evoked through unique, imaginative, and innovative experiences. Such moments, often breaking the routine, could stem from field trips, special projects, or impactful interactions, fostering a lasting impression and a deeper understanding. Dear Educators and parents, my wonderful team put together this curriculum guide to the Loveboat, Taipei series, especially with the growing interest in teaching #aapi history and literature around the country. These questions began with the Barnes & Noble book club questions developed by Jenney Nguyen, librarian at Martin Luther King Jr. Library in San Jose, CA, and expanded from there. Thank you also to HarperStacks for their support. The full curriculum can be downloaded at https://lnkd.in/gXm_dA4d I'm happy to connect about classroom visits, so feel free to send teachers my way! Here are some sample classroom questions from the guide: Immigration & Family Narratives: At the beginning of Loveboat, Taipei, the author gives readers a glimpse into Ever and Megan’s friendship, in part by including their reactions when Ever’s parents confront her during their dance rehearsal. From these details, what can you say about the differences in how these two friends were raised? What do their families value differently? How do the girls’ actions reflect their upbringings? Immigration, Mental Health, Learning Differences: In Loveboat, Reunion we learn more about Xavier’s learning differences—dyslexia and dysgraphia—that makes high school not as seamless as it might come to other students. How does Xavier’s unique upbringing and early immigration complicate his ability to get help and a diagnosis? What does Xavier learn about navigating his learning differences by the end? History, Colonialism and Music: In Loveboat Forever, explore how Pearl's engagement with both classical and traditional Chinese music helps her understand the impact of colonialism on different cultures. How does this exploration affect her personal identity and understanding of her cultural heritage? How does this impact her understanding of what stories are represented or voiced more than others in narratives of power and colonialism? #loveintaipei #loveboattaipei #teachers #teachersmatter #aapicurriculum #teachers #thoughtleadership

Translation from Māori: 1. Relationship and kinship 2. Hospitality and generosity 3. Unity and oneness The words above have been memorized by all the students at a 1-9 grade school we visited near Queenstown, on the South Island. In our travels around the world we have found many learning spaces that excel at BELONGING. We especially loved visiting schools in New Zealand that were actively striving to cultivate spaces where all students belong. BELONGING has been shown to increase levels of wellbeing and happiness. It can also contribute to higher levels of academic success. Beyond being a happy classrooms strategy, the data is clear that cultivating spaces of BELONGING for ourselves adds to a more meaningful, happy life. Join us on our June Happy Teacher workshop in the Caribbean and find ways to cultivate this art in the classroom and beyond.
