So many hot takes on that CMO post. You know the one. And you know what? I don't disagree. But I also can't help but wonder if the blame may be a little misplaced. The problem she has is spin. Rework. Sending the agency back to the table. We've all been through it. She attributes this problem to strategy and if it's not already blindingly obvious by my title, that's where I disagree. Strategy - when done right - prevents rework. It makes sure client and agency are on same page. It helps ensure that bold creative ideas are properly aligned to the outcomes the client needs to achieve and the right amount of confidence is built that we'll get there together. More often than not it's a lack of strategy altogether that causes spin. Sometimes that's from the agency underdelivering, but sometimes it's a shitty starting point, from dare I say, the client brief. In either case, it's clear that a strong agency-client relationship just doesn't exist, and that's the more important problem to solve. More than once in my career I've had a client ask how they could brief us better in order to ensure better outcomes. These are the kinds of questions that great clients ask that lead to healthy, trusting relationships with their agencies. And THAT'S where the magic happens. Find an agency you trust. Be a good partner, and you'll have good partnerships.
