In 2024, the critical 1.5C threshold was breached for a full year for the first time, highlighting the urgent need to rapidly cut global emissions. Much of the work needed to curb climate change goes beyond the remit of individuals – from scaling up renewable energy to stopping the production of oil, gas and coal. But research shows that individual actions can add up too. But it can sometimes feel overwhelming to know where to start. Which steps can actually make a meaningful difference? We have rounded up some of the most impactful actions you can take to live a more sustainable life this year, from eating more plant-based food to reducing your number of flights to buying more second-hand clothes. This very interesting article by eco-shaper offers a compelling overview of the advancements in renewable energy and sustainability in 2024, presenting a mixture of optimism and urgency. It highlights some key milestones, such as the peak in global emissions and the growth in clean energy accessibility, while underscoring that much remains to be done to meet climate targets. Building on this, Gabriele Crescente, Editor at Internazionale, provides a sobering look at the state of international climate diplomacy in his recent article (" Un macigno sulla Cop29 - https://lnkd.in/dBKV42g2 "). Two main points stand out: - Funding gaps in biodiversity conservation: the recent UN Biodiversity Conference in Colombia failed to secure the necessary $200 billion in annual funding to meet conservation goals set in Montreal in 2022. This significant shortfall highlights how financial commitments for biodiversity continue to lag behind global ambitions; - Challenges in plastic pollution negotiations: crescente notes that upcoming negotiations in Busan on a treaty against plastic pollution could stall over disagreements on limiting plastic production—a critical measure if we are to reduce environmental damage effectively. Both articles remind us that while technological advancements and policy shifts are encouraging, the lack of cohesive, enforceable international agreements could hinder meaningful progress. Achieving true impact requires not only innovation and corporate pledges but also robust, globally coordinated policies with accountability measures in place. As we look ahead, these insights underscore the critical need for stronger commitments and a renewed focus on unified global action to address the complex and interconnected challenges of climate change and environmental degradation. #Sustainability #ClimateChange #RenewableEnergy #Biodiversity #PlasticPollution #EcoShaper #Internazionale #GabrieleCrescente #EnvironmentalDiplomacy #GlobalAction #SustainableFuture

18/37 We need to play a key role in defining secure, sustainable, and affordable energy systems, ensuring just and inclusive clean energy transitions. We therefore commit to achieving concrete steps forward in strategic areas. Among these, we recognize the key role of renewables, including from sustainable biological origin, nuclear energy for those who opt to use it, including advanced and small modular reactors, energy efficiency, methane emissions reduction in line with the Global Methane Pledge, industrial de-carbonization, most innovative technologies such as renewable and zero-emission hydrogen, and carbon management technologies. We will pursue secure, resilient, affordable and sustainable supply chains for critical minerals and raw materials, including through the Minerals Security Partnership (MSP) and MSP Forum, and pursue implementation of the Five Point Plan for Critical Minerals Security adopted by G7 Climate Energy and Environment Ministers. We also underline the opportunities offered by circular economy, including recycling and resource efficiency, as well as innovative technologies. Investing in innovation should also help us in addressing the key topic of reducing GHG emissions in heavy-emitting sectors and promoting the development of a circular economy. Leveraging private sector financing as well as innovative financing mechanisms are important steps to support energy transitions in developing countries, increase resources for adaptation and resilience and enable actions for responding to loss and damage to assist developing countries that are particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change, especially SIDS and LDCs. The transition to a net zero-emissions, sustainable, climate resilient and nature positive, pollution free and circular economy will necessarily need to involve all the members of society, to ensure just and inclusive transitions, leaving no one behind. Women, youth, and Indigenous Peoples s tend to bear the brunt of climate change-related disasters. In this context, we place particular emphasis on need to empower these societal sectors and include them in efforts to address climate change and environmental degradation. We highlight the importance of nature-based solutions in this context. Plastic pollution is a global problem that requires urgent attention. We look forward to an ambitious and effective global agreement to end plastic pollution. Biodiversity loss is an equally serious threat. Climate, biodiversity, and human health are interrelated and interdependent. We recall our commitment to implement the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework fully and swiftly and to achieve each of its goals and targets, which is the landmark plan to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030. We also underline the G7 role in advancing implementation of the CMA5 global effort halting and reversing deforestation and forest degradation by 2030.

Simply Explained: Carbon Offsets: Real Impact or Greenwashing? → Can buying carbon offsets really help the planet? Our honest take on a controversial topic. → by Lorne Michael Cousins Carbon Offsets: Real Impact or Greenwashing? Carbon offsets seem like a simple fix for the climate crisis: you pay someone else to reduce emissions so you can keep polluting, right? But the reality is way more complicated. Let's look at the good, the bad, and the greenwashed when it comes to carbon offsets. How Carbon Offsets (Theoretically) Work Here's the idea: You or a company calculates their carbon footprint (the amount of greenhouse gases emitted). You pay to fund a project that supposedly reduces emissions by that same amount, like planting trees or investing in renewable energy. You get to claim you've "offset" your emissions, basically canceling them out. The Problem With Carbon Offsets It's not a substi... → Full Article: https://lnkd.in/gTttDnWj #Environment #Essentials #Explained #Carbon #CarbonOffsets #Offsets #SustainabilityDirectory
