From mentee to mentor Back in 2023, I joined the NMC’s Rising Together programme as a mentee. My key goal was to gain more confidence. I was paired with a wonderful mentor (Safeena Rashid) after a period of professional 'speed dating' to meet my match, and went on to complete the programme successfully. Later that year, I decided to apply as a mentor and again was paired with someone truly wonderful. At first, I felt some imposter syndrome. ‘I’ve only just graduated as a mentee. Who am I to think I can mentor anyone?’ But we all have things to learn from each other as well as to teach each other – that’s the whole point! Mentorship can meet many different needs: * Does someone need your career advice? * Can you give a mentee a confidence boost? * What opportunities and contacts can you share? * What’s your story and how might it help someone else? * How can you support and encourage someone to reach their potential? We’re all mentors and mentees at all times! So, let’s be open to learn, and also prepared to guide. Our fifth cohort of Rising Together launches later this year – I’m excited to see who will be part of the community next. #Mentoring

Can we as humans keep living the way we are? The idea of connection, and bringing back meaningful deep relationships is on my mind. Living through the COVID-19 pandemic started to change the world of work because many individuals changed themselves. The world experienced an ‘awakening’, a realization that healing was required. We saw that we were missing that deep human connection in the way we were living our lives. Mentor relationships can be one way to bring this connection back. **** These are a few thoughts I share in my upcoming book, Create a Mentor Culture, How to mentor with heart and start a ripple effect. Did you know that there are hundreds of thousands, possibly millions of youth looking for mentors in Canada? Imagine a world where everyone has a mentor within their workplace, and they then pass that on to those in need in their community and across the world. While mentorship has existed for centuries, the last five years or so has seen an increased focus on it in and outside organizations. YET, there are so many continuing to look for mentors. Mentorship is a gift and that giving back and connection can be passed on. Before becoming a mentor though, I encourage you to look within. Are you able to hold space for others in a meaningful way and commit fully to the relationship? If yes, then it's the start of a beautiful thing. who are you birthing? who is your anchor? Contemplating the impact of having a strong support network from the start is akin to being born in the valley or on the mountain. Those born on the mountain start with an advantage, while those of us in the valley must first struggle to reach level ground before we can dream of climbing higher. When you start at a disadvantage, you seek new "parents"—mentors who can guide you through life's challenges. This mentorship is invaluable, with mentors willingly sharing their experiences to help others grow. In today's world, many seek mentors, but few are willing to become mentors themselves. If you're asking yourself, "How can I find new 'parents' to mentor me in this new land, where I still feel like I'm in the valley?" we're in this together. Let's create a culture where experienced individuals are eager to share their wisdom and guide the next generation. I am very excited to announce our 2023 Mentors of the Year! 🏆 I know, I know... another list, but hear me out. Many of the prizes and lists out there are based on referrals, handshakes, and heck, some people even pay to play -believe me, I get asked to pay 1K to be on the "top women founders" list year after year. We wanted to do it differently- to honour people in a merit-based way to spotlight their achievements and selflessness. At Mentorly we wanted to honour those who are truly walking the walk. We looked at the raw data on how much mentors gave back this year (can you believe our top mentor mentored 45 times!) and the impact they have. We can do this because our technology tracks their participation, the success of the programs. We have deep analytics and real time feedback from mentees to base these awards on. These incredible mentors gave their time to their mentees sharing their guidance, past experience and support. I can't wait to see our Top Mentors initiative grow every year, as it's so important to honour those who give back in the shadows, rarely recognized for their dedication. It also gives us an opportunity to spotlight our partners who run their mentorship programs on Mentorly. This 3 mentors, that were part of two programs came out on top: 👏 Bravo to the Top 3 mentors of 2023, Kezia Preville MBA, Ann Shiau (Anna) Chan, Dallas Barnes! Kezia was part of NudgeUp to Rise Up by Nudge Caribbean is a coaching offering born through conscious listening to our entrepreneurs, recognizing that sometimes all an entrepreneur wants or needs is guidance, insight and support from someone who has successfully walked in their shoes. This program serves entrepreneurs from across the Caribbean. 🧡 Anna and Dallas were part of the Startup Women program, a transformative initiative powered by Startup Nation Central offers a unique opportunity for entrepreneurs to build their network and engage in 1:1 sessions with industry leaders and experts. This month, they began an exciting journey at Claylab Education Foundation, with over 400 new mentor journeys commencing. It's been a month filled with calls, messages, and the forging of new bonds as mentor and mentee relationships take root. As Purva Parwani beautifully expressed, "each pair represents a fresh start, a new hope, and the beginning of a rewarding friendship and educational journey. Although initiating conversations with strangers can initially feel daunting, the process is undeniably heartwarming. It's truly inspiring to witness the transformative power of these connections." Initially, what had seemed like a daunting task has evolved into an enjoyable and seamless journey. I'm excited to share a story that highlights the profound impact of mentorship – "The Ripple Effect of Mentorship." It all began with a simple gesture – a senior resident taking a first year student under their wing, offering guidance, support, and a listening ear during those pivotal first weeks of college. What started as a mentorship soon blossomed into a friendship, a bond forged through shared experiences and a mutual desire for growth. As the years passed, the first year student became a sophomore, the sophomore a junior, and eventually, a mentor themselves. They paid forward the wisdom and support they had received, guiding a new generation of residents through the highs and lows of university life. But the ripple didn't stop there. The seeds of mentorship planted in that initial interaction continued to spread, touching the lives of countless others within the community. Residents became mentors, mentors became leaders, and the cycle of support and encouragement perpetuated, creating a ripple effect that echoed far beyond the confines of our residence halls. What began as a simple act of kindness had evolved into a transformative force, shaping not only the lives of individuals but the very fabric of our community.
