💡 Are we the untapped superheroes of sustainability? 💡 As businesses strive for a greener future, it's high time we recognize the pivotal role Human Resources (HR) and by extension all leaders play in driving positive change. HR, as example, isn't just about hiring and managing employees; it's about shaping a culture that values our planet and its resources. 🌿 Here's my personal story: Every morning, I would walk into my office and see stacks of paper on my desk. I knew we needed to make a change, not just for the environment, but for our company's long-term success. So, I decided to take action together with all members of the internal sustainability committee. 🌎Implementing eco-friendly policies like remote work options, reducing paper usage through printing, eco-friendly coffee machines, recycled drinking bottles, etc. These small changes made a big impact on our carbon footprint, and I saw first hand how a greener workplace not only benefited the planet but also boosted employee morale and productivity. ♻️ In our talent acquisition process, I started seeking individuals who aligned with our company's sustainability strategy. I wanted employees who were also eager to contribute to a greener future. By incorporating sustainability into our hiring process, I not only brought in like-minded individuals but also create a stronger, more unified team. 🌱 To foster a sense of purpose and shared responsibility, we launch green initiatives that involve our entire workforce. We engage employees in sustainability efforts. This creates a culture where everyone feels a sense of ownership and pride in our collective mission. 💪 Key Learning: Leading by example is essential in driving change for each leader. By showcasing the commitment to sustainability and encouraging the team to do the same, we inspire action. I learned that sustainability isn't just a trend—it's a mindset shift that requires collective effort, certainly if sustainability is a key strategic driver within the company. Culture Amp's latest research led by Fresia Jackson and team (which I'm now on - omg!!) reveals a concrete truth: sectors like construction, manufacturing, and transport, directly facing the brunt of climate change, are more actively engaging employees around issues of sustainability. 🚧🏭 Yet, tech companies, often seen as leaders in innovation, are falling behind. Why this discrepancy? Could it be... 🔍 Lack of Regulatory Pressure: With fewer environmental regulations compared to other industries, tech companies might feel less compelled to engage employees on sustainability issues. 📈 Market Expectations: The tech industry's customers and investors may not demand or value sustainability to the extent seen in other industries, leading to less internal emphasis. 🔰 Perceived Low Impact: Tech might view their environmental impact as minimal compared to industries that have direct, tangible effects on the environment.
