Always handy the most reliable up to date dataset for simulations and solar budgeting.

Weekly power simulation, week 26 of 2024 At the beginning of last week, the wind died down entirely for a three day period, really stress testing the solar-battery nexus in the model. However, Tuesday morning, while keeping the lights on for almost the entire night, the battery storage was depleted, and three hours' of 'backup' was activated, breaking a 48-day(!) streak of 100% wind, solar and batteries. On a side note: I know there will be a lot more redundancy and spinning reserve in practice than this simplified model - also due to the district heating needs in Denmark. However, it's interesting how difficult predicting such shortfalls will be in practical terms. Knowing if and when to have a few GW on standby for a few early morning hours before the solar curve kicks in - that's an interesting exercise! ----- Each week, I run a simulation using real-world generation data from the Danish power grid, with #windenergy and #solarenergy scaled to match future (2033) capacities, as forecasted by the Danish Energy Agency. MASTER Approach: M as Made for solar First of the 6 key properties to consider when choosing a reliable solar dataset is that the data should be "made for solar." The dataset must specifically designed for simulation of solar power. The older datasets lack internal integrity and geographical representativeness. When selecting representative months, equal weightage is given to solar radiation and meteo parameters (air temperature and wind), even though solar radiation parameters have bigger influence on the performance of a solar power plant. Such approach is optimal for building energy simulations but not for solar energy applications. The Triple-Junction Tandem Solar Cell Scientists have developed a novel triple-junction perovskite/Si tandem solar cell by making use of a new cyanate-integrated perovskite solar cell that is stable and energy efficient. The tandem solar cell can achieve a certified world-record power conversion efficiency of 27.1 per cent across a solar energy absorption area of 1 sq cm. #Solar #SolarPower #Innovation

Here’s a chart showing sources of energy for California in April 2024. Renewables with batteries provide a significant part of the demand but gas and imports are still needed at night. What further steps are needed to continue this positive transition? What are the components of the peak demand? How could these be reduced? Or shifted away from peak times? How much is typically air conditioning? How could this be reduced? Better efficiency of AC units? Better use of shade? Better insulation? Refrigeration? Again, how could peak time demand be lowered or shifted? Is it pumping gas? Why is the base demand so high? It seems like it never drops below 19GWs? Is it lots of things on stand-by? What could be switched off or better managed? It looks like imports and gas, in this chart for April, are most needed at night (sunset to sunrise). How can nighttime demand be stopped or shifted to daytime hours? Is nuclear generating at full capacity? What constructive ideas do you have?

How much has #solar irradiance been varying year-to-year? Check out this interesting analysis by the Solcast team in pv magazine Global, showing the interannual variability during the last ten years. Places where solar irradiance is similar year-to-year show up in blue. The areas of orange and red show places where there are larger swings or trends in year-to-year irradiance. Solar #engineers beware! If your projects are in "red" regions, be careful what types of conclusions you're drawing from data! If you're estimating the long-term resource, and/or the expected future resource, we recommend using a full Solcast bankable 2007-Present Historical Time Series. If you're already using a #satellite data source, in such areas you might also want to consider a second opinion to look at the full timeseries from. Wow … that’s a big chunk of the Australian population in the “red zone”. Especially in NSW‼️ James Luffman what does that mean for RTS-REZ (or L-REZ as Energy Queensland has recently dubbed them). Does it mean we will need more storage / storage in distribution preferably Community Batteries ESaaS. James do you have any diversity data - that is while the red area is more “volatile” is it all volatile at the same time⁉️ If there’s diversity does that mean Transmission will play a greater role as “Insurance”⁉️ Great graphic and info … so many more possible questions ‼️ PS … NZ might lose its mantle as the “Land of the Long White Cloud” Lynne Gallagher Peter Price Felix Keck Peter Kilby Simon English
