But yet I catch myself talking about capital invested and jobs created (the two gold standard KPIs) as leading indicators of economic development success. What if these are lagging indicators, though? What could be leading indicators? Measurable activities that attract a company here or keep a company here? I think it's things that showcase an innovative, entrepreneurial, forward-thinking, growing community...like: # Venture events and startup programing $$ Capital invested into infrastructure Presence of innovation districts like Crescent SC # University-industry collaborations % Growth of young professionals 👆 Good numbers here likely mean there is a solid talent pool and ecosystem that will fuel growth for the company and its employees. And Greenville, SC has it. ...with Furman University playing a key leading role (bias aside, obviously).
