Often depicted in movies as the pinnacle of the financial world and constantly popping up in our weekly news broadcasts, Wall Street is a symbol of financial power and influence, but what exactly is it? Wall Street is more than just a street in Lower Manhattan, New York. It's the beating heart of the American financial system. This bustling epicentre is home to some of the world's largest financial institutions, including banks, stock exchanges and investment firms. The New York Stock Exchange's history traces back to the signing of the Buttonwood Agreement by twenty-four New York City stockbrokers and merchants on May 17, 1792, under a Buttonwood tree located outside 68 Wall Street. This agreement organized securities trading in New York City and marked the beginning of the New York Stock Exchange. At its core, Wall Street serves as the centre of the stock market in the United States. The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and NASDAQ*, two of the most prominent stock exchanges globally are based here. These exchanges provide a platform for buying and selling shares of publicly traded companies. The connection of global financial markets means that what happens on Wall Street doesn't stay confined to its physical location. News of a major economic event or a shift in investor confidence on Wall Street can and will quickly travel worldwide, affecting markets in Asia, Europe and elsewhere for the positive and the negative. This link underscores the significance pull Wall Street in shaping the broader global financial landscape. Owun

Welcome to Wall Street 101, where we break down the complexities of the financial markets in a way that feels less like a textbook and more like a conversation over coffee. So, let’s dive right in. First off, what is Wall Street? Sure, it’s a street in New York City’s Financial District, but it’s so much more than that. It’s the beating heart of the U.S. financial markets, where giants like the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ reside. When people talk about Wall Street, they’re not just talking about a location; they’re referring to the entire ecosystem of finance that influences economies around the globe. Now, who are the key players on Wall Street? Think of investment banks like Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan as the matchmakers of the financial world. They facilitate buying and selling of securities, orchestrate IPOs, and even play a role in mergers and acquisitions. Then we have hedge funds—these are like the high-stakes poker players of the market, pooling money from investors to make big, often aggressive trades. And let’s not forget brokerage firms like Charles Schwab and E*TRADE, which empower everyday investors to buy and sell securities, giving you the tools to play in this big league.

I designed this poster to discuss the formation and impact of financial bubbles especially related to Wall Street Financial bubbles are common in Wall Street history, characterized by rapid inflation of asset prices caused by enthusiastic market behavior and speculative investments. Despite several lessons from previous catastrophes, including as the dot-com boom and the housing crisis, the desire for immediate rewards frequently drives investors and institutions to ignore fundamental pricing. This cycle of irrational exuberance, fueled by herd mentality and often insufficient regulatory monitoring, leads to unsustainable price levels, which finally crash, inflicting considerable financial and economic disruption. Wall Street's proclivity to "blow it" underscores the ongoing problem of managing innovation and risk in a complex and frequently volatile financial system.

To most investors volatility is not risk - their risk is partial or total loss of the portfolio. There are many forms of risk that have not reared their heads in portfolio managers' 30 year backtests and the linear equity curve is but a dream. The only way to truly combat this is knowing what you don't know and diversifying across asset classes. Look into papers by Chris Cole or Eric Crittenden for insight on how best to build an 'All Weather' or 'Dragon' Portfolio.
