Did you know that the historic battleship New Jersey is currently in dry dock for maintenance at the Philadelphia shipyard? This mighty vessel, which once ruled the seas with its sheer power and prowess, is now undergoing some much-needed TLC to ensure it remains a symbol of engineering excellence for generations to come. The USS New Jersey, affectionately known as "Big J," was a force to be reckoned with during its active service days. Commissioned in 1943, this majestic battleship played a crucial role in World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and even the Cold War. With a length of over 887 feet and a displacement of 45,000 tons, the sheer size and firepower of the New Jersey were unmatched. One of the most impressive aspects of the USS New Jersey was its ammunition capacity. This battleship was capable of carrying and launching projectiles that weighed up to 2,700 pounds, delivering devastating blows to enemy targets from miles away. The sheer destructive force of these projectiles was unparalleled, making the USS New Jersey a formidable adversary on the high seas. While most of the sailors who once walked the decks of the USS New Jersey have long since passed, the legacy of this legendary battleship lives on. Its presence in dry dock serves as a reminder of the incredible feats of engineering and military might that were achieved during its operational days. The battleship New Jersey stands as a testament to the power and capabilities of the United States Navy, showcasing the ingenuity and innovation that went into building such a formidable warship. #EngineeringExcellence The USS New Jersey may be getting some maintenance work done, but its legacy will continue to inspire awe and admiration for years to come. ⚓️ #battleship #navalhistory #PhiladelphiaShipyard #ussnewjersey #drydock #maintenance #engineeringpower #navy #americanmilitary #warship #mightyvessel #historyinmotion #veterans #usnavy #pentagon #military https://lnkd.in/esRjPRih

The history of the largest explosions #11 USS Maine explosion The USS Maine explosion occurred on February 15, 1898, involving the United States battleship USS Maine. The ship was anchored in Havana Harbor, Cuba, as tensions between the United States and Spain escalated due to the Cuban War of Independence. At approximately 9:40 PM, an explosion tore through the USS Maine, causing it to sink rapidly. An official U.S. Naval Court of Inquiry ruled in March that the ship was blown up by a mine, without directly placing the blame on Spain. Out of the approximately 355 crew members aboard the ship at the time, around 260 perished in the explosion or its immediate aftermath. The exact number of casualties varies in different historical accounts due to discrepancies in the count and the difficulty of recovering bodies from the sunken ship. This incident heightened tensions between the United States and Spain, ultimately leading to the Spanish-American War. The loss of American lives aboard the USS Maine fueled public outrage in the United States and played a significant role in the decision to go to war with Spain. The rallying cry "Remember the Maine, to hell with Spain!" became a popular slogan as the nation mourned the loss of its sailors and demanded justice for the incident. pearlharbor: dec071941: uss arizona: destroyed: japan: bombing:
Follower of Jesus Christ. Husband, father, son, brother, friend. Servant leader and strong supporter of those in my care.
On this day, 7 December 1941, the Empire of Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, and the ship USS Arizona was hit by several air-dropped armor-piercing bombs. One detonated an explosive-filled magazine, sinking the battleship and killing 1,177 of its officers and crewmen. Unlike many of the other ships attacked that day, the Arizona was so irreparably damaged that it was not repaired for service in World War II. The shipwreck still lies at the bottom of Pearl Harbor beneath the USS Arizona Memorial. It is dedicated to all those who died during the attack. Remember those who gave everything. 🇺🇸 https://lnkd.in/dT4SnnUh

👍 Recommended reading: A review paper "War at Sea: Burn Care Challenges—Past, Present and Future" by Dr. Matthew Tadlock's team. Throughout history, seafarers have been exposed to potential thermal injuries during naval warfare; however, injury prevention, including advances in personal protective equipment, has saved lives. Thankfully, #burn injuries have decreased over time, which has resulted in a significant clinical skills gap. This paper reviews the mechanisms of thermal injury during routine naval operations and naval warfare. Lessons learned from various modern maritime mass casualty incidents are emphasized. The review article concludes with recommendations to prepare modern navies for a future war at sea. 🔗 Check the full paper: https://lnkd.in/e_DrJhBJ
