🔋Are we entering a new phase in the #BESS industry? After another great and crazy week at #RE+, here are my key takeaways: While the solar industry has remained relatively stable without any major breakthroughs, most of the conversations and questions focused on #BESS. Core concepts like augmentation, safety standards, and performance metrics are now much better understood. Although we still need to iron out some details, stakeholders have a more solid grasp of these fundamentals. However, in this new phase, we are starting to see real data from projects that have been in operation for the past few years. And with that data come new challenges. Software integration and active monitoring are becoming crucial, along with understanding how poor telemetry impacts availability and SOC. I am sure the industry will continue to learn from these early lessons. What excites me most about this industry is how fast it evolves, pushing us to keep learning and growing. I still remember when bifacial modules and albedo were the big topics of discussion. I’m eager to see what is next: Na-ion batteries, #hydrogen, or maybe something entirely new?

Hydrogen Innovation Initiative 🚀 #Hydrogen, coming down the line To meet net zero targets the use of hydrogen will be an increasingly important focus. The production and transportation of hydrogen will require both repurposed and newly built #hydrogen pipelines and process facilities. #Hydrogen is volatile and has a high propensity to leak. There is focus on design codes for making the pipe, metallic, & composite, fit for #hydrogen. However, less focus on the pipe supports. To eliminate issues associated with current pipe supports i.e. CUPS (Corrosion Under Pipe Support) & fatigue inducing vibration. ‼️Current pipe supports adopt 3 basic options, each has generic issues & failure modes which #hydrogen will magnify.‼️ 1. 🚨Pipe sitting direct on supporting structure (steel or concrete). The primary issue is CUPS. Point loading & abrasion of the pipe coating combined with moisture retaining crevices = corrosion. 2. 🚨Pipe supported by clamped shoe. They can loosen in service & travel off the supporting structure. They damage the pipe coating during installation & form moisture retaining crevices around the pipe = wall thickness reducing corrosion. They can increase pipe vibration = fatigue failure. 3. 🚨Pipe supported by welded shoe. Welding on any #hydrogen carrying pipe to be minimised. Welding on a shoe to the outside of the pipe, the HAZ (Heat Affected Zone) will extend through the pipe wall. Material within the HAZ becomes susceptible to #hydrogen embrittlement. Post weld heat treatment (PWHT) is used to reduce susceptibility to #hydrogen attack, however adequate PWHT of the shoe to pipe welds may be difficult due to shoe geometry. 💡The POD shoe can offer a better alternative support for hydrogen carrying pipework. ✅POD shoe does not require any welding to the pipe. ✅POD shoe allows the pipe to be raised from the shoe to allow removal of the POD inserts to aid inspection of the pipe. Note the pipe will only require minimal raising of 1mm to remove the inserts & the load path through the POD shoe is unaltered. A jacking bolt facility is incorporated within the shoe construction. ✅POD shoe insert pipe contact surface shaped to minimise corrosion inducing crevices. ✅POD shoe inserts manufactured from range of materials to reduce corrosion & improve vibration damping. ✅POD shoe will not damage the pipe coating during installation. There is no clamping action between the shoe & pipe. ✅POD shoe inserts can be easily changed out to offer different support parameters to suit changing operating conditions. ✅POD shoe will not travel along the pipe & off the supporting structure. The POD shoe is fixed (bolted or welded) to the supporting structure. ✅POD shoe does not require the use of shims & guides installed post installation of the pipe. These items often form un-coatable areas & crevices which promote corrosion. ✅Every part of POD shoe assembly is fully inspectable. 🌎 Www.podpipesupports.com 📧 contact@podpipesupports.com

I was lucky enough to be able to attend the conference on future electricity grids (Tagung Zukünftige Stromnetze #zukunftsnetz) which took place January 24-25, 2024, at Novotel Am Tiergarten, Berlin. It featured speakers from politics, industry, regulatory authorities as well as researchers, and provided many impulses for our research activities at the DLR-Institut für Vernetzte Energiesysteme. It is no exaggeration to say that this event is an important annual meeting place for key players in the energy sector with the core topic of the future development of the German #electricity grids. Also, a roadmap for the future #hydrogen grid was presented by gas transmission operator OGE. Some takeaways from the perspective of a grid modeler: • As one TenneT TSO GmbH representative stressed, we can expect enormous additional demand for reactive power compensation systems due to the shutdown of many conventional power plants, but also due to a generally higher grid load. • State Secretary Dr. Philipp Nimmermann announced that reactive power from #renewable energy plants would be subject to regulatory treatment still this year, meaning that operators of #photovoltaic systems will soon be able to provide reactive power to the grid. Next year, privision of spinning reserve will be tackled as well. • The German regulatory agency (Bundesnetzagentur) has inspired me to think about future grid modeling principles. One aspect is that loads will no longer be fixed but mostly be controllable in the future. What is the most practical way to represent such flexible loads in large-scale grid models? • Also the #resilience of our future energy system was addressed: What is the right social compromise between #security_of_supply and inferred #infrastructure costs? I personally think we could very well live with a slightly higher SAIDI here in Germany which stands very well in international comparison, as long as it keeps the costs of the #energy_transition manageable. In our own contribution (poster and proceedings), we reported from our progress in evaluating and developing model coupling methods and applying them to realistic models for the future electricity and hydrogen grids of Northwest Germany. To start off, we have implemented a coupled power-hydrogen test system with the #Python-based tools #PyPSA, #PandaPower and #PandaPipes. I can recommend the conference for all who want to stay up-to-date with the energy transition in Germany or establish new contacts within the electricity sector.
