With many years experience in accountancy and from being the virtual finance team for many companies, I can confidently share these tips: 1. **Establish clear goals** - Defining your objectives will help you identify the expertise you need in your virtual team. 2. **Hire the right talent** - Look for self-motivated people who are comfortable working remotely. Expertise in digital tools and software for accounting is a must, or partner with a business who provide a team just like this. 3. **Invest in technology** - Ensure you have the right tools to facilitate seamless communication, collaboration, and data security. LinkedIn friends, DYO Investments has grown from zero to 1.1million square feet of commercial real estate in 12 years, and we have a plan to continue that growth trajectory. Due to a recent departure, we are looking to hire a FP&A associate/manager who is interested in learning our business and ideally growing into a Controller/CFO of a decent-sized company one day. What will this job entail? Keeping the trains on time- financial reporting, taxes and investor relations tasks never stop. The status quo isn't bad, but the status quo can always be beaten. Being present- we are an in-office company. The office is where we all come to learn, solve problems and grow. We have nothing against remote work, but it's not the right model for our company. Caring about the Culture- with only half a dozen people in the back office, everyone on our team has a "MBA" (mop bucket attitude). About 5-6 times a year, there are times when I have to open the mail myself. I like it...there is no job here that is below anyone, regardless of what their title is.

For new FP&A professionals, here's a quick tip: Know your company's business inside and out. The technical skills of finance can be learned, but what will truly help you succeed is understanding how your business works. Don't just analyze numbers - immerse yourself in operations. Take the time to meet with department leaders. Ask them about challenges, goals, key drivers of revenue, and costs. Tour production facilities to see processes first-hand. Sit in on client meetings to grasp what they need. In short, breathe and live the business daily. Because forecasts and models are useless without context. But with context, you'll be ready to help make major decisions and create opportunities for growth. And that's how you deliver real value in this new role.
