Our country is at a pivotal moment where we must maintain our competitive edge in advanced scientific research, and to do so, we need to prioritize innovation and collaboration while also safeguarding national security. The US has seen an influx of international scientists and engineers which has undeniably enriched the nation's scientific endeavors, supporting breakthrough discoveries, transformative innovations, and advancements. However, in parallel to valuable global collaboration lies a growing concern - how do we protect intellectual property and prevent critical technology from being compromised by foreign adversaries and other bad actors? The answer to this requires out-of-the-box thinking; a departure from “doing things the way they’re always done, " which often relies on broad-brush country-based criteria or blanket restrictions. Rather, we need an approach that uses technology to more swiftly and effectively identify and mitigate potential risks, and augment the work that national security teams are already doing.
