Understanding the thermo-acoustic stability in burners Thermo-acoustic instability in burners with flames poses a critical challenge for achieving stable and efficient combustion systems. The PhD research of Vertika Saxena addresses the innovative problem of determining a burner's quality factor in relation to its stability under variable acoustic conditions. Employing a probabilistic framework and leveraging both experimental and numerical methods, the study explores the impact of acoustic embeddings—defined by reflection coefficients at system boundaries—on burner stability. Key contributions include the development of a groundbreaking experimental setup to manipulate boundary conditions and the use of a low-order network model to replicate realistic physical boundaries. The findings unveil stability-enhancing design insights, such as the benefits of larger perforation areas, and identify the properties that define burners with superior stability across diverse applications. The research of Saxena introduces a comprehensive method to assess the quality factor of burners with flames under varying acoustic conditions. By combining experimental and numerical approaches, it establishes several generic system-level correlations between the flame transfer function properties and the flame stability, contributing valuable insights for designing stable and efficient combustion systems. I am thrilled to share our work at ASME 2024 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition Conference, where we explored the impact of coal particle size on gasification behavior to optimize process efficiency and reactor design. In our study, coal particles of varying sizes (1 mm, 4 mm, 6 mm, and 8 mm) were gasified in a 1073 K furnace under limited air supply. We found that smaller particles (4 mm) achieved higher peak temperatures and faster reaction rates, while larger particles exhibited slower reactions due to increased thermal conductivity. Using a validated mathematical model, we simulated residence time, core temperature, and gas species concentrations (O₂, CO, CO₂), aligning well with experimental data. Refining numerical techniques for diffuse-interface models in binary-fluid flows Modern high-tech applications involving complex fluid dynamics often require understanding the behavior of two immiscible fluids, especially in situations like droplet merging or breakup. Traditional models that treat the boundary between fluids as sharp interfaces are limited in their flexibility. Diffuse-interface models, which represent these boundaries as smooth transitions, offer more versatility at the cost of higher computational demands. By allowing control over interface thickness and equilibrium velocity, these models eliminate the need for explicit boundary tracking, making them especially suitable for complex fluid dynamics problems. In his PhD research Tristan Demont introduces innovative numerical methodologies to enhance the efficiency and reliability of computations for diffuse-interface models, explores their approximation properties as they approach the sharp-interface limit, and investigates their application in wetting scenarios. This comprehensive study not only advances the computational framework for diffuse-interface models but also provides insights into their behavior in limiting scenarios, supporting their broader application in fluid dynamics research. Upcoming Thursday, Teja Donepudi from TU Delft | Mechanical Engineering will present the results of the H2Flex project (funded by Topsector Energie, TKI nieuw gas) at ASME International Gas Turbine Institute Turbo Expo 2024. Here different methods for simulation of the mixing process of air and hydrogen in the Destinus OP16 DLE combustor will be discussed. Mixing is crucial for flashback prevention and low NOx, this study enables us to push the limits further.
