Last Thursday we wrapped up our summer 2024 internship program. As I am every semester when they complete their time with us, I’m sad to see them leave, but excited to see what they do next. I truly believe having an internship (or two) is an integral part of a college student’s growing period. Not only do internships allow you the chance to immerse yourself in a role that you may hope to one day pursue full-time, but you’re also gaining knowledge, experience, and learning from a group of individuals who have all at one time been where you are. One of the biggest takeaways from an internship is the connections you make; they are key. My greatest piece of advice has always been to talk to as many people as you can. Informational interviews can be just as powerful as the interviews you take for a job. Why? Because when talking to industry professionals, you’re gaining valuable insights which in turn can help you make informed career decisions. Something I learned from our interns this summer; you don’t always need to be in person to form genuine offline connections. Throughout the summer, a friendship formed between our two social media interns, one that will surpass their time with us. It was a reminder that you can still create meaningful connections at work without having to sit right beside someone. I cannot tell you how happy that friendship makes me. Currently, JMG Public Relations is comprised of mostly former interns turned full-time employees. That speaks volumes to the program we have. As we prepare to welcome in a new semester of interns, I look forward to meeting a new group of students while I continue to watch our former students fly! Heineken's "The Candidate" In an effort to find the best candidate for an internship, the famous Dutch brewing company, Heineken, run a unique and out-of-the box recruitment campaign. Candidates were put in different situations like: - Being escorted by someone pretending to have a heart attack - Having to cheer up a crying interviewer - Being asked to help with a mock fire drill The videos of candidates' reactions were posted on social media and selection was done on the basis of votes. Major Takeaway: With an out-of-the box recruitment marketing strategy, Heinekin was able to not only find a suitable candidate but also engage the audience and attract top talent. #EmployerBranding #RecruitmentMarketing #TalentAcquisition #CompanyCulture #FutureOfWork

Passionate Future Professional in International Business | Specializing in CRM, Marketing & Communication | Driven to Drive Brand Growth
Thank you for your application, but unfortunately, at this time we are unable to move forward with you. Receiving this email has become a common occurrence lately as I apply for marketing intern positions. It's a sentence that often pops up on my lock screen notification center, causing me to hesitate even opening it. It's that dreaded phrase that, after hearing it repeatedly last week and the week before, can even elicit feelings of frustration. However, earlier this week, something different happened. Instead of the usual "thank you, but no thank you," the email read: "Recruitment for the summer trainee position has ended, and we have proceeded with another person. But as a token of appreciation, you can enjoy a complimentary coffee and chocolate bar on us from the national kiosk chain." This unexpected message came from a large Finnish coffee producer recruiting for summer interns. It was a gesture I had never encountered before—a small thank-you gift for simply applying. In my opinion, it's genius! Coming from a coffee producer, it's not just a thoughtful gesture but also a brilliant employer and product branding strategy. Not only does it leave rejected applicants feeling appreciated for their efforts, but it also fosters a positive impression, making them more inclined to reapply in the future. I believe this approach serves as a cost-effective method to market both the employer and the product/brand. Even if someone is rejected as an applicant, they still have the opportunity to create a satisfied customer, thereby ensuring a potential new avenue for product promotion.

Please don’t hire interns to do a full-time job. You want an entry level hire PAY for one. Stop abusing interns just because they need to put something on their CVs. Want their work, freaking pay for it. I don’t think you can get a Caramel Frappucino from Starbucks when you have paid for a water bottle. Interns; I get that you want the experience and knowledge but please don’t let the need to prove yourself fool you. Be ambitious but don’t be afraid to ask for your rights. RECRUITERS BE FAIR. I just spoke to a friend's daughter, a rising college senior about to begin a PR agency internship. She asked some great questions, one of which was who do I think are the best PR people and why (their backgrounds). I've been in the industry a fairly long time and have worked with lots of comms people--some great, some good, some average, some not-so-average. The best PR people I've worked with include two former segment producers for local network TV affiliates, a former broadcast business reporter, a former ski instructor and a college soccer player who studied accounting. Why do I think they're the best? It's because they know how to quickly craft concise and compelling stories, and they're incredibly pragmatic. #PR #publicrelations #careers
