Last semester, I was privileged enough to watch Chatham University's Chapter of The Coalition of Occupational Therapy Advocates for Diversity (COTAD) presentation about hair care and inclusion in our role as OTs. This presentation discussed everything: from aspects of caring for different hair types to different hair tools and equipment to specific hair care routines, and lastly, to how hair may hold different cultural and religious values for clients (but not always). The main goal is not to assume anything and always ask our clients what their preference is! I learned so much valuable information from this presentation, and look forward to learning more from COTAD at Chatham!

April is Occupational Therapy Month! School-based Occupational Therapists help students work on certain skills needed to access the curriculum and the school environment. • Fine Motor and Bimanual Coordination Skills as needed to do movements with small muscles and tasks that require the two hands, each doing separate activities to accomplish a task. Some of those items include typing, writing, and managing school supplies. • Executive Function Skills as needed to plan out, initiate, and stay focused and regulated to complete assignments. • Sensory Differences as needed to help students understand how their body processes different stimuli from the environment and strategies to help them focus and continue doing their work. Fulfilling President Lincoln’s Promise: Overcoming the Stigma of Veteran Healthcare I’m excited to present this year’s keynote at the Barbara Rider Colloquium at Western Michigan University. The VA Mission Statement: "To fulfill President Lincoln's promise to care for those who have served in our nation's military and for their families, caregivers, and survivors." Let’s look into the stigma associated with Veteran healthcare through the different lenses of Veterans, their families and caregivers, the public, and VHA employees. I will share Veteran experiences of VA healthcare. I will also share my own experience as a disabled combat Veteran while both receiving and providing Veteran healthcare in the private sector and in the VHA. We’ll explore the nature of Veteran healthcare stigma and its effect on Veteran healthcare access. We’ll discuss ways Occupational Therapy practitioners can combat Veteran healthcare stigma. I trust that in helping others understand the stigma, they will see the potential in today’s more inclusive, innovative, and mission-driven Veteran healthcare. There is hope that we will fulfill Lincoln’s promise. Where does Occupational Therapy fit in this hope for the future?
