Building a reputation for innovation in heart care includes years of dedication and hard work. In 1956, Dr. Donald Effler and Dr. Lawrence Groves performed the world’s first successful series of stopped-heart surgeries. They used a heart-lung machine developed by their colleague, Dr. Willem Kolff. A similar process is used every day around the world, allowing surgeons more time to perform complex operations.
