Are you a Region 8 community (CO, MT, ND, SD, UT, WY) that needs support with climate resilience and developing project solutions? On January 10th at 10:30 a.m. MT, FEMA Region 8’s BRIC Technical Assistance staff will be hosting an in-depth webinar for interested communities regarding FEMA’s Building Resilient Infrastructure & Communities (BRIC) Direct Technical Assistance (DTA) program prior to the upcoming request deadline. DTA provides 3 years of non-financial support to communities and tribal nations to advance community-driven hazard mitigation and climate adaptation objectives. Support is tailored to each community’s needs and wide ranging. This non-financial, hands-on program is like having a set of in-house experts dedicated to helping your community move the needle! To register for the webinar to learn more about how this program could serve your community, register here: https://lnkd.in/dzuty-S3 The request deadline to be considered for the FY23 BRIC DTA cohort is now open through February 29, 2024. #BRIC #resilientcommunities #climateadaptation #climateresilience #communityplanning #resilience #ClimateChange #Adaptation #Mitigation #FEMA #FederalEmergencyManagementAgency

The town planner shortage is real. This quick little interview paints the picture well. It's a great career, but so many planners (including myself) 'fall' into town planning by accident. It's just not something that high school career advisers tend to know or talk about. We're getting fewer and fewer town planning graduates, whilst the number of town planning jobs continues to grow. Spread the message - planning is a great career :)
🎙️ Yesterday, CEO Matt Collins MPIA talked about the critical planner shortage across Australia on ABC NewsRadio. There's currently a shortage in every State and Territory apart from the ACT. 🎓 He touched on how we can ensure there is a pipeline of planners coming through university and high school, and the importance of raising awareness around the role planning can play in tackling some of the biggest challenges of our time such as housing, climate change, and sustainability. Urban park planner, placemaker, dog lover, bird watcher, tennis nut and explorer of parks and neighbourhoods.
This post talks about the upcoming campaign to raise awareness of urban planning. However, I feel like there are bigger problems with the industry than just ‘awareness’… I actually hadn’t heard of urban planning until I got to university. I’m also the first in my family to go to university and also to work in the public sector. There are a lot of skilled and talented kids like me in the regions, and we need to do more to encourage them into the profession. The course is called urban and regional planning after all… and the regions are suffering the most with the critical planning shortage, especially on topics like affordable housing and the impact of climate change. There is a lot more we could be doing as professionals to go into high schools and talk about the profession. Geography as a subject is disappearing and Study of Society (and its equivalents) only has planning as a single unit. There is not enough is in the primary or high school curriculum to promote it. Also bring back traineeships at Council level so people can learn to be para planners on the job and study via distance education. Lastly, don’t even get me started on the HECS/HELP fees for urban and regional planning - It is almost double what I paid in 2006 when I graduated. If the shortage is so great, get the fees dropped for local students. Just a few thoughts as a millennial planner of almost 20 years…

Today, we heard from FEMA Region 3, Virginia Department of Emergency Management, Weston & Sampson, and City of Annapolis, MD about the various aspects of including climate change in Hazard Mitigation Plans, including why FEMA has updated their HMP policy and what they are looking for in updated HMPs, what BRIC funds can cover, examples of how climate can be integrated in each chapter of an HMP, and lessons learned from a community that has updated their HMP according to the new guidelines. So much information packed into a one and a half hour webinar! Thank you to our speakers and to all who attended and offered their thoughts on what they see as hurdles to including climate in Hazard Mitigation Plans (see their answers below). #HazardMitigationPlans #ClimateChange #ClimateRisk #VirginiaCantWait #ResiliencyAcademy

🌍 Understanding and use of early warning and early action systems to reduce the impacts of climate-related hazards has progressed significantly in the past decade, but there is still a long way to go to embed them as normative approaches. Our dialogue will reflect on the future trajectory of early warning and early action, and co-develop a vision for the role of Risk-informed Early Action Partnership (REAP) in the post-2025 environment. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/e46f-cZJ #climatecrisis #earlyaction
