It’s Learning Disability Week! According to the National Center for Learning Disabilities, 2.28 million school-age students in the U.S. have a learning disability. Learning Disability Week aims to educate, spread awareness, and increase understanding of learning disabilities. The website states: “Being diagnosed with a learning disability does not mean a person is not intelligent. It means they need extra support and specialized care to overcome the challenges they face in a particular subject area and learn in their unique way.” Stride Tutoring supports all types of students with our personalized approach. I love the word why! 😀 As we observe Learning Disability Week, several important questions come to mind about inclusion and learning beyond conformity and control: Why must learning always occur with a child sitting on a chair at a table? Why is the assessment of learning primarily through written documentation? Why can’t students choose how they demonstrate their knowledge and understanding, reflecting their diverse ways of learning? Why do lessons have to be confined to indoor spaces and rely heavily on verbal instruction within a traditional learning environment? Why must individuals disclose their learning needs before expecting any adjustments or accommodations? Why do we wait for a child with specific needs to be present before educating ourselves about different learning methods and disabilities, instead of integrating this knowledge into our standard practices? Why isn’t more time dedicated in teacher training programs to discuss diverse learning needs and approaches? Why don't adult training programs focus more on understanding neurodiversity and the importance of neuro-inclusion? These questions highlight the need for a shift from conformity and control to a more inclusive and flexible approach to education.
