Fourth Annual Female Bartending Scholarship Launched Mixer and tonic producer Double Dutch, has launched its Female Bartending Scholarship Programme for the fourth consecutive year, as part of its ongoing commitment to foster upcoming female talent in the hospitality industry. As a company led by women, Joyce and Raissa de Haas, the twin co-founders of Double Dutch, hold a special mission to celebrate women in the drinks and hospitality sector. Despite small progress being made, with women going from making up a mere 5% of CEO positions to just over 6%*, there is still a lot of work needed to overcome gender disparity in the industry. A recent Gender Pay Gap Report by Women in Hospitality, Travel & Leisure and PwC UK also showed a rise from 4.2% to 5.2%**, further cementing the need to create change and tackle underrepresentation in hospitality. The UK Female Bartender Scholarship Programme is designed to empower aspiring female bartenders and mixologists in the UK. Open to women aged 18 and over, and for those already working in the industry or aspiring to enter bartending, the programme encompasses professional training and personalised mentoring. The deadline for applications is February 16, 2024, with the final 12 scholars announced on International Women's Day. Applicants who don’t make it onto the main programme will be invited to wider virtual sessions to benefit from the expertise of the trailblazers. Last year’s Double Dutch mentors included Anna Sebastian, founder of Celebrate Her, an initiative to showcase female bartenders and offer networking opportunities, Laura Willoughby, founder of Club Soda, a global movement committed to help people drink mindfully and live well, and Kelly Harrison, Head of Bars for New World Trading Company, an award winning gin producer. The scholarship has proven its value and success, leaving a tangible impact on individuals in the industry, with success stories emerging not only across the UK, but also internationally. Cléa Iqbal secured a position at Salmon Guru in Dubai after completing last year's programme, commenting: “Being a part of Double Dutch’s Female Bartending Scholarship was career changing. Being in a room of people on a similar journey to myself, looking to find their feet in this industry gave me a community. Hearing from industry experts that all started where we are gave me the push to pursue my dreams. I am now travelling the world and doing what I love, working in amazing bars and spreading the Double Dutch name!” Another past scholar, Amy Warne, has since secured a position as Head Bar Coach at The Botanist in Lincoln. She commented: “The scholarship gave me a newfound confidence in my abilities as a bartender. Since the scholarship, I've grown in both my service and my knowledge within my job role.” Raissa de Haas, co-founder of Double Dutch commented: "The hospitality industry poses unique challenges for women, especially with the noticeable gender gap in leadership roles.…

𝘿𝙤𝙪𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝘿𝙪𝙩𝙘𝙝 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙨 𝙗𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙨𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙢𝙚 😍 🍹 Tonic and mixer producer Double Dutch Drinks has opened applications for the 2024 edition of its Female Bartending Scholarship. The scholarship gives women an opportunity to build and progress their careers in the bartending industry The scholarship, now in its fourth year, is open to women aged 18 and over, and at any stage in their career. For 2024, the number of selected bartenders has gone up from 10 to 12. The programme was set up in 2020 to help women make inroads in the industry and counter the growing gender pay gap in the sector. Double Dutch cited the minor rise in the 2023 Gender Pay Gap Report by community group Women in Hospitality, Travel & Leisure, and PwC UK – from 4.2% to 5.2% – as an example of the need to create change and tackle women’s underrepresentation in hospitality. Raissa de Haas, co-founder of Double Dutch said: “The hospitality industry poses unique challenges for women, especially with the noticeable gender gap in leadership roles. “Our Female Bartending Scholarship Programme aims to provide more than just enhancing people’s skills but is a platform designed to really propel women further into their hospitality careers. “For 2024, we’ve increased the number of places on the programme to enable even more women in hospitality to unlock progression. “Since launching the programme in 2021, we’ve helped talented women to reach new heights in their careers and we look forward to helping even more fantastic women bartending talent to grow in their professional journey.” Both those who are already working in the industry and those who are new are invited to apply for the programme, which offers professional one-on-one training and personalised mentoring. Applications for this year’s scholarship are open until 16 February The eight-week mentoring scheme will cover a wide range of topics, including drinks education, personal growth and in-person experiences such as distillery visits and learning how to craft gin.

Say hello 👋 to Kat Stanley-Whyte, Bartender and Agave Expert at The American Bar at The Savoy, and this week’s #FaceOfTheWeek. Kat tells us the wonderful story of where her love for hospitality began, she says, “I started bartending in a backpackers bar in Australia, and immediately fell in love with the world of hospitality. When I returned to the UK for my university studies, I continued working in various bars, clubs and restaurants throughout my degree and was lucky enough to settle in Edinburgh upon graduation. “This is where I was fortuitous to have the opportunity to run my own venue, The Basement Bar & Restaurant; a neighbourhood Mexican hotspot filled to the brim with agave spirits and the smell of tacos. A love affair with the world of agave began, and I strived to make the venue a stand-out in the city. That was until five years later I was offered the position of Bar Manager, working alongside Sian Buchan to open Uno Mas. “A few competition wins along the way and I had the chance to make the move to the big smoke, and join the legendary, historic bar team at The American Bar at The Savoy under the mastery of Head Bartender Chelsie Bailey. Whilst working at the iconic venue I also began to venture into the world of freelance, firing out my camera and taking the leap into the world of spirits communication. So now I have a beautiful blend of being behind the bar a few nights a week whilst diving into new prospects. A lot is on the table for this year, so keep your eyes peeled!” Continuously striving for excellence and self-improvement, Kat’s dedication and commitment to the industry is clear. Kat shares some of her short and long-term goals, explaining, “Short-term, it is to learn to take a break every now and then – to live it and not just preach it. Life can be a balancing act and recently, I’ve learnt the hard lesson that if you don’t take a break and make sure you’re looking after your physical and mental health, then it can have a big effect on your day-to-day. “Long-term, I strive to continue to be an advocate for women in the industry and showcase to younger generations how magically transformative this career choice can be. There are endless avenues within hospitality that make it an incredible pathway into a multitude of job options. That’s the beauty of hospitality, there’s the opportunity for personality to shine.” Offering advice to fellow professionals and peers, she urges, “Don’t be shy when reaching out to other industry professionals and brands. Asking questions is the first step towards collaborations and the passing of knowledge. In all honesty, just remember to have fun. This industry is fun, we create fun; for our guests, for our friends, for ourselves. Just remember to enjoy it!”

Tend Bar at Events: Temporary gigs bartending at weddings, festivals, or corporate events can provide valuable real-world experience. These events often require you to work quickly and cater to a diverse crowd. 4. Take a Bartending Course: While not a requirement, reputable bartending schools or courses can teach you the basics of mixology, bar etiquette, and responsible alcohol service. It's a great way to build a foundation before jumping behind the bar. 5. Volunteer or Intern: Many bars and restaurants offer unpaid internships or volunteer opportunities for aspiring bartenders. WSET Wine & Spirits Educator. Brand Advocacy and Education Consultant. Founder of Sesto Senso Academy.
Today is World Bartender Day, therefore it comes natural to celebrate, but the following, are things that should be reminded every single day: This profession: •Gave me discipline. •Taught me to stay in my place. •Taught me that people think they know more than they actually know. •Taught me that the majority of bartenders I know care more about fame than improving their skills and knowledge. (This is really dangerous for the future of the industry). •Taught me that the ‘old school way’ is not always the ‘right school way’. •Taught me when to speak, and when to close my mouth. •Taught me the difference between knowledge and intelligence. •Taught me that not all ‘popular, apparently-great’ bars and bartenders are that great, and that not all ‘less popular’ bars and bartenders are that bad. •Taught me that not all people are worth arguing with. •Taught me that if I don’t prove how much I’m worth, nobody will do it for me. •Taught me to challenge myself. •Taught me that people change when intoxicated. •Showed me the negative effects of excessive alcohol and substance abuse on people. •Allowed me to travel all over the world. •Allowed me to Learn a new language. •Allowed me to Learn more about myself. •Allowed me to meet life-changing people. •Allowed me to discover the interesting and endless romance, science and art of Spirits, Wines, Beers, Cocktails, Hospitality, Business and Food. •Allowed me to inspire, and be inspired through education. . . . 📸 @videovillage.no #worldbartenderday

Did you know today, February 24, is World Bartender Day? 🍺 Bartending is considered to be one of the oldest professions known to man. Alcohol has been around for millennia and there was always someone to serve it. 🍷 Similar to recruiting, many people think bartending is easy. You just post a job and fill the role, or in the bartending case you mix alcohol with another beverage and BAM! You're done. 🥂 But there's so much more than goes into it. 🍻 Yes, at the basic level you are mixing alcohol with another beverage, but what kind of alcohol is it? Will it go with the other liquid you are mixing it with? 🍹 Cocktails can go be sweet, they can be savoury, they can be colourful, they can even be on fire! 🍷 From the classic Cesar to the more vibrant Blue Lagoon, bartenders take pride in their craft and know what they are doing. 🍺 🍹 Happy World Bartender Day! 🍸 #WorldBartenderDay #Bartender #HRProfessional #Recruiter #TalentAcquisition
