Emerging Biopharma has become more increasingly invaluable to the development of cancer therapies over the last decade, up from 33% to 60% of trial starts over the span. Large pharma has conversely fell from 59% to just 28% over the decade. Interestingly, while large pharma oncology trials fell by 20% over the last 2 years, emerging biopharma trials remained stable - showing their resilience through economic turmoil. Why are only 3.4% of oncology drugs approved? Oncology drug development remains one of the most challenging fields, with just 3.4% of drugs making it through the clinical trial process to approval. Why? ➡ Cancer is not a single disease. The multitude of cancer types and mutations makes it difficult to create broadly effective treatments. ➡ Oncology trials take much longer—an average of 13.1 years compared to 5.9 to 7.2 years for non-oncology trials. The extended timelines increase costs and risks, which adds to the difficulty of getting a drug approved. ➡ A major stumbling block is Phase 2. The transition from Phase 2 to Phase 3 has a success rate of only 32.7%, largely due to difficulties in demonstrating efficacy at this stage. Treatment for Cervical Cancer KEYTRUDA, Approved by FDA, Combined with Chemoradiotherapy The FDA has approved Merck's anti-PD-1 therapy, KEYTRUDA, in combination with chemoradiotherapy (CRT) for treating patients with advanced cervical cancer. This is the third indication for KEYTRUDA in cervical cancer and the 39th in the U.S. The approval is based on positive results from a clinical trial showing a 41% reduction in the risk of disease progression or death compared to placebo plus CRT. The approval expands treatment options for cervical cancer patients and highlights the potential of immunotherapy in addressing unmet medical needs.
