The Sad Reality of Bollywood 🪩 🕺 Bollywood, India's 🇮🇳 vibrant film industry, is renowned for its glamour, music, and larger-than-life stories. However, beneath the dazzling exterior lies a complex reality that often goes unnoticed. 1. Nepotism and Favoritism 🕺 💃 : The industry has long been criticized for favoring star kids over talented outsiders. This practice often sidelines deserving actors, writers, and directors, stifling fresh talent. 2. Mental Health Issues 🧠 : The pressure to succeed, coupled with intense public scrutiny, takes a significant toll on the mental health of many artists. Unfortunately, mental health is still a taboo topic, leading to tragic outcomes. 3. Gender Inequality 🧍♂️🧍♀️ : Despite progress, Bollywood still struggles with gender equality. Female actors often face pay disparity, limited roles, and objectification, hindering their career growth. 4. Lack of Creative Freedom 🖼️: Commercial success often dictates the kind of films that get made. This results in a lack of diversity in storytelling, with many films adhering to safe, formulaic plots. 5. Exploitation and Harassment 🤬: Reports of exploitation and harassment, both on and off set, have emerged, shedding light on the darker side of the industry. The #MeToo movement has made strides, but there is still a long way to go. Bollywood's influence is undeniable, and it has the power to inspire change. By acknowledging these issues and working towards a more inclusive, fair, and supportive environment, we can hope for a brighter future for Indian cinema. #Bollywood #FilmIndustry #Nepotism #MentalHealth #GenderEquality #CreativeFreedom #Exploitation #Harassment #IndianCinema #ChangeForBetter #LinkedInPost

Bollywood: When will women's stories steal the show? Imagine this: Two female characters in a Bollywood film, chatting about their dreams, fears, or anything else– anything but a man! Should be a common sight, right? Yet, the vast majority of Bollywood movies fail this criteria. This is called the Bechdel Test, a basic measure of female representation. Bollywood can be a magical world, but one often dominated by male narratives. Sure, we see more women gracing the silver screen, but are they well-rounded characters with their own desires and goals? Data suggests not. Over half of Bollywood movies fail the Bechdel Test, as they prioritize romantic entanglements or narratives revolving around male characters. However, there is a glimmer of hope. Critically acclaimed films like "Neerja" and "Queen" prove the power of showcasing women's voices. So, the question isn't can they, it's when will these stories become the norm? For the future of cinema can be bright, but only if we let our leading ladies be as important as their male counterparts. The less beautiful side of 'starry nights'❗ Every citizen has the right to live their lives with dignity, which is recognized as a human right. It is important to value and respect such rights.Hema Committee Report findings make us feel shameful. 1.The major issue which women face in the film industry is sexual harassment. It is the worst evil which women in cinema face in the film industry. 2."Compromise" and "adjustment" are two terms very familiar among women in Malayalam film industry and the by, they are asked to make herself available for sex on demand. 3.To pass urine or change sanitary napkins, women must go to a forest or behind a bush. 4.Drugs are quite common among youngsters in the film world. 5.Women hear knocks on their doors at night and that is quite common. 6.Online harassment (cyber-attack) In today's film industry, women are more educated and therefore more courageous. Hence they speak out such things very openly But unfortunately because of their outspokenness they are avoided in films. It is not easy to change the situation in the film industry. #hemacommiteereport #filmindustry #cinema https://lnkd.in/eJSQGyt9

Back in 2008 I made a difficult decision to quit my job in a finance company abroad and shift back to India to pursue theatre. Back in the UK while I was working, I went to so many performances and theatre shows, just to expose myself to the arts. I never imagined myself to be a part of this world considering it’s such a people facing work and I'm an introvert. Eventually, the urge to work creatively became so strong that I knew I needed to leave. So I left for India because this was the best place to figure out things while supporting myself creatively. I started out as a culture journalist. After understanding the medium better I took small baby steps in the theatre world and by 2018 I was directing my own work. Getting used to working for myself was difficult in the beginning, because in corporate there were fixed hours and here, it’s more amorphous. In terms of acceptance, it was tokenistic in the UK too considering the conversations had just begun. In theatre, they were welcoming and well intentioned but at the same time uninformed. Telling queer stories today feels so much more ordinary, in the best way possible. The teams who tell them are also quite open and sensitized. Back in the day, the actors were hesitant to take on queer roles. Most of the time, this came from not fully understanding what this representation means or it's impact. Getting past that hesitation took a lot of emotional effort. It wasn’t easy, but slowly, things started to click. I work in a non hierarchical, small setup. I usually work with folks who've the needed sensibilities built in, but once we had done open calls to recruit actors from different backgrounds. Since it was a queer themed project we took multiple sensitization sessions. We showed them queer cinema, took them on queer walks and updated them on new queer terms. These exercises create a safe space to learn. Today, my queerness is a part of what I do, just another part of a good story. That shift—seeing how collaborators, audiences, and even I've grown—feels like real progress. In the wake of the recent #HemaCommittee report on the #Malayalam film industry, HerStory spoke to women across Indian cinema. The reality? #Harassment, sexism, and silence—both on and off set. Their stories are a wake-up call. 👇 Malathy entered cinema with passion & hope, but faced 8 months of abuse. Reporting it only led to temporary “solutions.”Power abuse & harassment remain widespread. "Why are you here?": Preeti, a young cinematographer, faced these words on her first day. Dismissed by male colleagues, she’s spent more time proving her worth than perfecting her craft. 🍻 Drinks after work—harmless, right? Not for Asha, a costume stylist. During one such session, a director made unwelcome advances, leaving her to question her own boundaries. #Women need leadership roles in unions to enforce real change. Studies show only 8% of key roles in #Indiancinema are held by women. Real transformation begins with power in decision-making. Read More 👇 https://lnkd.in/duPT7WzF
