Thank you to everyone who participated in my poll about #collegedegrees last week! Out of the 90 votes it looks like: - 38% of you got a 4-year degree and are doing work in the same field that you studied - 42% got a degree but are not doing work in the same field - 20% did not get a degree I did some follow up research to find some data around cyber degree programs and job opportunities. Although we will talk about specific focus areas for a cybersecurity architect role in a follow up post, let’s look at this role in relation to a requirement for a 4-year degree. NC State University provides some information for my research: In the last year, there were 5,533 cybersecurity architect job postings in the United States. 69.35% of those postings required a bachelor’s degree. Just 1.97% listed an associate degree as a requirement. Forbes assures that you don't need a formal degree to get a job in cybersecurity in general, recommending specialized, intensive training bootcamps to gain necessary skills and launch your career. However, they listed a bachelor's degree as a requirement to become a security architect. Knowing that companies are struggling to find security architects, will the requirement of a degree be removed from job postings? Unfortunately, probably not. Here is the problem I am seeing (and yes, I am a mom with 3 kids in college right now): 1. University programs are expensive and many just cannot afford the cost to get the degree. 2. There are a LOT of talented cybersecurity hopefuls out there who, with some time under their belts and focused training could be amazing cybersecurity architects. 3. Cybersecurity architect is not an entry level job, so how would a 4-year degree get you right into this position? Wouldn’t experience get you there as well? Possible solutions to the problem? 1. Promote from within – Grow your architects from analysts and engineers and backfill them with entry level cybersecurity professionals! 2. Tuition Reimbursement Programs – Invest in your workforce! They will be more motivated to stay loyal to the company and contribute. Plus paying for their training is cheaper than hiring an architect that you can’t find anyway. #CyberDegrees #Hiring #CyberSecurity #CollegeDegrees #Tuition #Education #CISO #CyberSecurityArchitect #WomenInCyber https://bit.ly/4bHdDxj https://bit.ly/3UMNKWz https://bit.ly/3uzb5AF

Actively looking for full time role in Information Technology. Problem-Solving/Windows OS/MS Office/Office 365/Troubleshooting/Adaptability/Attention to Detail/Computer Systems/Security Awareness/Basic Python Scripting
Unable to sleep tonight as the weight of this job hunt has begun to really bear down on me. Another week of submitting my resume countless times, without an interview in sight. I have not given up yet though and will continue to pursue what I have been working towards without falter. In other news, I was able to find a new cybersecurity boot camp called NukuDo that recently opened in Texas. After doing my research on the company, I found that they offer a paid hands-on training program that finishes by completing a 3-year contract with one of their partners. I've seen a ton of negative things about cyber boot camps online, with people stating that they are useless and companies give them no weight in hiring. With the current market though, it seems the only way to land an entry-level position is with prior work experience, even at the help desk level. Even with the negative opinions, I thought to myself 'Why not?' and decided to apply. I am currently in phase 2 of the process which was a programming aptitude test that I finished today. I am only waiting on the results to see if I move on to phase 3. So what are your thoughts? Are boot camps worth it? Would you try one if you were a fresher in today's market? What would you do if you decided not to pursue a boot camp? #cybersecurity #informationtechnology #lookingforjob #networking #technology

I've been speaking to a lot of really interesting candidates recently all wondering about the merits of a career in cyber vs other areas of the IT industry. Here's an article I wrote about a year ago that outlines why it's such a great move. Also, here's a short summary of the key points 👇 Cybersecurity Skills Gap in the US: - Dire shortage of cybersecurity professionals. - 700,000 cybersecurity jobs to be unfilled at the end of 2022 and even more now. - Universities unable to produce graduates at the pace of demand. Opportunities for Graduates: - Abundant opportunities in the cybersecurity sector. - Jobs created at more than five times the rate of the wider economy. - Graduates with the right skills and mindset will be highly sought after. Financial Rewards: - Pursuing a career in cybersecurity can be financially lucrative. - Average wage of a cybersecurity professional is around £116k. - Specialists with in-demand skills can command even higher salaries. Diverse Specializations: - Cybersecurity encompasses a wide range of roles and job types. - Analysts, testers, administrators, data interpreters, and system defense experts are all in demand. - Non-coders also have opportunities in the field. Future-Proof Career: - Rapid evolution of skills in demand. - Cybersecurity skills are considered future-proof. - Roles involving systems analysis, cybersecurity architecture, and dealing with online threats are set to grow. Getting Started: Graduate Schemes: - Companies offering graduate schemes or training programs. - Some schemes do not require a computer-related degree. - Competitive starting salaries offered, e.g., National Grid Co pays up to $84k. Certifications: - Employers prioritize skills over traditional education. - Self-directed study and certifications demonstrate commitment. - Cisco accreditations and certifications from Google and AWS are valuable. Soft Skills: - Employers value soft skills in addition to technical expertise. - Culture fit, enthusiasm, effective communication, problem-solving, and adaptability are crucial. - Personal development and a proactive approach are highly regarded by hiring managers. If you'd like more information on any of this, or how to break into a career in the dynamic world of cybersecurity, get in touch. #cybersecurity #careers #skillsgap

Finding entry-level IT jobs can be challenging, regardless of having a degree. Having a Bachelor's degree in Science majoring in Cybersecurity doesn't always guarantee qualification. It's about hands-on experience, not just academic credentials. Balancing a current job while seeking part-time opportunities to gain practical experience is my approach. Transitioning smoothly into new role that matches or exceeds my current compensation is crucial. Seeking advice on this career path transition. Any guidance on securing part-time positions to kickstart my IT journey would be greatly appreciated. #ITJobs #Cybersecurity #CareerTransition #HandsOnExperience

🛡️🔐💼 **The Looming Crisis in Cybersecurity Recruitment: A Call to Expand Entry-Level Opportunities** 🚀 As we navigate a digital-first era, the demand for skilled cybersecurity professionals is at an all-time high. Yet, a critical trend is emerging that could jeopardize our digital safety and economic stability within the next 3-5 years—the stark shortage of entry-level opportunities in cybersecurity. This scarcity is setting the stage for a future deficit of mid to senior-level experts. ### The Current Landscape 🌍 Every sector is battling an increase in cyber threats, heightening the need for robust cybersecurity measures. However, the path to entering this vital field is fraught with obstacles, primarily the lack of entry-level positions. This gap is not just narrowing the talent pool but is also deterring potential newcomers, including bright graduates and career switchers. ### The Entry-Level Gap 🕳️ The industry's preference for experienced candidates is sidelining aspiring professionals who are eager but lack formal experience. This cycle of demanding experience without offering the chance to acquire it is self-defeating and short-sighted. ### Long-Term Implications ⏳ If this trend persists, we risk a significant shortfall in qualified cybersecurity professionals ready to step into crucial roles. This could lead to heightened vulnerability to cyber threats and stifle technological innovation, putting businesses and personal data at risk. ### A Call to Action 📢 To prevent this impending talent crunch, we must take decisive actions: 1. **Create More Entry-Level Positions**: Companies must invest in the future by establishing more beginner-friendly roles that offer on-the-job training. 2. **Enhanced Educational Programmes**: Educational institutions need to collaborate closely with industry experts to tailor curricula that meet the practical demands of today’s cybersecurity challenges. 🎓 3. **Apprenticeships and Internships**: Expanding these opportunities in cybersecurity will provide invaluable hands-on experience and help integrate newcomers into the field. 🛠️ 4. **Awareness and Accessibility**: Raising awareness about cybersecurity careers in schools can pique interest early and equip students with the information they need to pursue this path. 🔍 ### Conclusion 🎬 The cybersecurity sector is at a pivotal point. By forging more entry-level pathways today, we can secure a skilled workforce capable of addressing the cyber challenges of the future. It’s time to nurture the next generation of cybersecurity talent. The security of tomorrow hinges on our actions today. 💪🌐 #Cybersecurityrecruitment #InformationSecurity #nqbrecruit
