Why I would never choose the 'self-employed' salon model... There is a shift in the salon world, where some salon owners have decided to go down the self-employed route and fill their salon with independent artists. This type of salon is something that I would never do. I believe the employed model will make you the salon owner more money, but that isn't the reason why I wanted an employed salon. I love the employed model. I love training my team. I love teaching my team. I like my client to be treated a certain way. I like being in control of what happens in my salon. When I opened my salon in Australia I really want it to be systems-based. I wanted the clients to come in and be treated a certain way. I wanted them to feel relaxed and get a real experience from my salon. If I’d have decided to go down the self-employed route (as in, independents in my salon), I would have no control how the client was being treated, no control over the standards of service or the quality of work and this is something I would never do. I completely understand why some salon owners choose the self-employed model. Maybe they're scared to open up with all the unknown outgoings so the income from chair renters helps pay their rent and contributes to the bills? With no staff there’s no drama drama having to pay wages or tax etc. but for me that's a small price to pay to control how the clients are treated. With this huge shift at the moment towards self employment, (we're seeing over 50% of people in our industry going down the self-employed route) I'm getting more and more calls from salon owners that have adopted this model saying they're not making any money and it's nothing like they envisioned. What they thought was the easy option has turned into a nightmare and they’re having to work harder than ever to keep the salon afloat. They’ve realised that the only people making the money are the self-employed people in their salon, whilst they're struggling to pay their bills, they're struggling to make any money and to be honest, they don't have a salon business, they're just landlords. I do know there's other forms of self-employment, like commissions as well as simple rent-a-chair or suite or booth rent or whatever you wanna call it. I believe this shift to self-employment is going to change, I'm seeing more and more people struggle to even find chair renters for the salons now. Once I knew what all the numbers were in my salon, I enjoyed the business side. The marketing, the training, the building, the systems. I really enjoyed being a boss. I loved that I got to make my teams dreams come true. I loved that I got to train a new generation. I loved the flexibility and income owning a salon could give me. I loved having a consistent client journey that my team could follow. None of which I’d have any control over if I’d adopted a self-employed business model. So there you have it. No shade on those that do - just my personal opinion.

After 3 decades in the salon business The salon industry is shifting big time. What used to be a regular 4-5 week visit is now stretched to 7-8 weeks because of rising costs. In fact, 64% of salon owners are seeing clients less frequently these days, and there’s even been a 30% drop in hair color services because people are going DIY. (American Salon) But here’s the thing: clients might come in less, but when they do, they’re willing to splurge. We’re seeing 30% growth in high-end treatments like extensions and custom services. (American Salon) The salon industry is still projected to hit $53 billion by 2027 and growing at a healthy 5.2% annual rate. (American Salon), so there’s definitely room to thrive. What does this mean? First off, go digital. About 45% of clients are using online booking systems (American Salon) —so if you’re not, you’re behind. Streamlining booking and payments will make life easier for both you and your clients. Next, loyalty programs are key. Offering VIP memberships or bundles keeps people engaged, even if they’re not visiting as often. And let’s talk services. High-end, premium offerings are where it’s at. The clients who are coming in want to treat themselves, so make sure you’re offering those luxury treatments. Think organic, vegan, sustainable products—this will also attract eco-conscious clients. Also, make sure the customer journey is stellar from the first point of contact online to when they walk out your salon door and then the follow up. And don’t sleep on the freelancing trend. More stylists are going independent, and that could be a great opportunity to either rent chairs or offer mobile services. Flexibility is key. The bottom line? The next few years are all about adapting to change and offering clients more value for their time and money. If you do that, your salon can thrive, no matter what’s happening in the economy. SalonCentric - A Subsidiary of L'Oreal USA just sent an email about the new work option for beauty professionals, called ArtistOnGo (AOG) I believe this concept is going to revolutionize the way pros work in the same way salon suites did. It may even rival suites which will be a great pivot. The concept is; Beauty Professionals can rent a chair from a salon listed on the AOG platform. You get to select whether you want to do hourly, weekly or monthly rentals. You have the option to rent multiple locations and you can choose the aesthetics of the salons you want to be paired with. Honestly this is GENIUS! I am really excited to see this expand as the current available options for beauty pros have been choosing the lesser evil. - A suite provides your own space, you manage your money, you set the aesthetic. The minimum payment is $300/week. Which is not feasible for most, as our bookings are cyclical rather than consistent. Even if you are the exception and you are fully booked, you get burnt out quickly. - A commissioned hairstylist/booth renter gives up 35% - 70% of their earnings based on their contractual agreement. If a service is $100, they make $30 - $70 BEFORE tax. Hence the great migration to suits or lack of enthusiasm from stylists. - Home salon owners are met with lower expenses mainly rent, but the proximity of your personal life to your professional life leaves a blur. That blur impacts the guest experience, as family aren't always mindful that it's a business. - Travelling hairstylist have to include travelling fees in their prices, as well as pack up all their supplies in their vehicle, carry it into the location, set up, then begin the service. Most times the surroundings aren't favorable, between kids touching the equipment and chemical services that require a functional sink, it can get overwhelming quickly. Artist on the Go, if partnerships with a spectrum of salons are secured in all states, it looks like a match made in heaven. Salon owners get money for empty chairs, stylist pay for their time, they can do multiple locations and clients get a salon experience.
