Online sales for cars don’t work … … at least not the way most people think. It is somewhat of a mystery: #ecommerce has transformed nearly every product category. Meanwhile #automotive is still at low single digit #onlinesales percentages in most markets – if not at zero. The #automotivenews article below provides good insights into the status quo in Europe. From my experience, this discussion is often flawed. The focus on “percentage of online sales” is misleading – let alone its poor definition. A real-life example: I bought our last family car from a dealer 400 km away. Consultation and negotiation happened via messenger and video-call. However, to conclude the contract, paperwork was still needed. From an OEM point of view, this was an offline sale (signature on paper contract). To me (and probably the sales rep too) it wasn’t. Likewise, #subscribing to a vehicle online after visiting a dealer is not exactly a pure online sale. In consumer goods #retail these behaviors are known as #showrooming and #webrooming. Maybe good examples to show that customer journeys are inherently multi-channel. Three recommendations, if you are into online sales in automotive 1. Think omni-channel – Practically all customer journeys are digital and physical. Define the role of each channel along the journey and map activity and conversion rates rather than transactional channel sales. 2. Make online as personal as offline – Often times the online-channel is seen as impersonal. Buttons and visuals on websites and apps. This is particularly surprising after years of videoconferencing. Add personal, audio-visual interactions to your journey. Allow customers to get the interaction with a sales rep or product genius just without the hassle of driving to a dealer at the outskirts of the city. Cars are still high involvement purchases. 3. Have a long-term business case – Automotive distribution is extremely expensive – often 25%-30% of MSRP (from wholesale to retail incl. incentives etc.). These costs need to come down. Steadily educate your customers to digital interactions along the sales funnel from consultation to trade-in appraisal and negotiation. So that over time the costly physical network can be streamlined. The contract closure (“online sale”) is likely not the highest priority along this path.
