Russian players’ neutral status at tennis tournaments On February 28, 2022, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) issued recommendations to international sports federations to bar athletes from Russia and Belarus from taking part in international tournaments, citing Moscow’s special military operation in Ukraine as the reason. Following the IOC’s recommendations in late February 2022, the majority of global sports federations decided to bar athletes from Russia and Belarus from all international sports tournaments. The International Tennis Federation (ITF) ruled on March 1, 2022 to suspend the membership of the Russian and Belarusian national tennis federations while also canceling all previously scheduled tennis tournaments in the two countries. On March 14, 2022, the ITF also confirmed its prohibition of the Russian and Belarusian national tennis teams from the 2022 Davis Cup and 2022 Billie Jean King Cup. However, the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) and the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) allowed tennis players from Russia and Belarus to continue participating in WTA and ATP tournaments, but only under a neutral status. A big call by the WTA? Maybe, maybe not, but given the growing relationship between WTA, ATP Tour and Public Investment Fund (PIF), the awarding of the #WTA Finals (especially given the travails of this event in recent years), and other major Tennis events to #Saudi is inevitable. Let's hope this can be used as a driver in moving women's rights forward in the Kingdom. My other concern, as mentioned in a recent post, the consolidation of #ownership, #governance and #capital of major sports such as #motorsports, #golf, #tennis, etc. are creating 'grand' global sports monopolies that have potential to create supply and pricing behaviour that will not necessarily be in the interests of those respective sports global fan bases, therefore will require regulatory scrutiny going forward. But by who? #sportseconomy #sportsbiz #Sportbusiness #privateequity #sovereignwealth #econimics #tennis FIM (Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme) PGA TOUR Formula 1 Formula E Dorna Sports MotoGP™ Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile

Did you know that… 🎾 Tennis, a beloved and widely practiced sport worldwide, was codified in the United Kingdom in 1870. This sport is a direct descendant of "𝗷𝗲𝘂 𝗱𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘂𝗺𝗲," invented in France in the 11th century, where participants played the game with bare hands. The invention of the racket in the 16th century and the scoring system led to the evolution of the game, which was played in the courtyards of wealthy aristocrats, gaining many royal fans, including Henry VII and VIII, who built more courts such as 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝘆𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗲𝗻𝗻𝗶𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝗛𝗮𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘁 𝗣𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲. 👑The popularity of tennis in the United Kingdom rapidly increased. In 1874, 𝗠𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱 patented "𝗔 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗲𝗻𝗻𝗶𝘀" with the authoritative signature of Queen Victoria, thus establishing modern grass tennis with rules and the use of a rubber ball, which was previously made of cork. 🧬 🌱In 1877, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗶𝗺𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 took place, simply known as #Wimbledon, and it is the oldest tournament in tennis history. Played on a grass court, the tournament takes place annually between the months of June and July. This tournament is part of the 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗹𝗮𝗺, consisting of the four most famous and followed tournaments worldwide: 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗵 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻, 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗮𝘀 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗚𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘀; 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗦 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻; 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻. 🏅 Tennis is #officially recognized as an #Olympic sport, with a rich history and a 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀. Its evolution has given rise to formidable players and continues to #inspire millions around the globe. #britishinstitutes #losapeviche#didyouknow#learning#TennisHistory #Wimbledon 🔗 Find out more: https://lnkd.in/eccPQMSt

Russian tennis players will be allowed to enter 2024 Olympics as neutral athletes — ITF Neutral athletes should comply with the IOC’s AIN and the IPC’s NPA principles March 7/ The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has allowed Russian and Belarusian tennis players to compete at the 2024 Olympics in Paris as neutral players, the ITF press service reported. "The International Olympic Committee and International Paralympic Committee will allow qualified and eligible athletes with Russian and Belarusian passports to compete in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games as Individual Neutral Athletes (AIN) and Paralympic Games as Neutral Paralympic Athletes (NPA). The ITF confirms that tennis players from these nations will be allowed to enter the Olympic and Paralympic tennis competitions in an individual and neutral capacity if they comply with the IOC’s AIN and the IPC’s NPA principles. Neutral athletes will need to meet the selection and eligibility requirements as set out in the applicable ITF Regulations," the ITF press service said in a statement. In late March 2023, the International Olympic Committee recommended that Russian and Belarusian athletes be allowed to participate in international competitions only in a neutral status, and only those who have not publicly spoken out in support of the special operation in Ukraine and are not associated with security forces. Also, Russians and Belarusians cannot compete in team competitions. The Olympic Games in Paris will be held from July 26 to August 11. #business #finance #financialservices

A new Chinese Sports Superstar is born! Zheng Qinwen's spectacular performance in this year's Australian Open has captured the attention of Chinese tennis fans and could signify the rise of a new Chinese sports superstar. Along with other up-and-coming Chinese players, Zheng is leading a resurgence of the sport in China, which is a massive boost for the growth of tennis participation and fan base in the country, and the sports economy as a whole. The politically charged scenario that the WTA faced in China a couple of years ago, with the Peng Shuai issue, and struggles with the pandemic event cancellations, have been brushed aside and the commercial juggernaut, the Chinese sports market represents for international rights holders is now chugging along nicely again. #tennis #chinasports #sportseconomy #sportsmarketing #WTA #china Tennis Australia Australian Open Chinese Tennis Association WTA ATP Tour ATP Media https://lnkd.in/esaJhbRB
