According to Joe McMonigle, Secretary General of the IEF - International Energy Forum (IEF), carbon markets are at an inflexion point, and with stronger international collaboration and smart regulation, they can raise billions of dollars for clean energy projects that would otherwise not get off the ground. The IEF report ‘The Role of Carbon Markets in Transitions’ delves into the potential of carbon markets to accelerate the transition to net-zero carbon emissions and universal access to affordable and reliable energy. It highlights the critical need for cohesive policy approaches, standardisation, and transparency to address market fragmentation and carbon credit risk. The global #energy #transition #investment reached approximately $2 trillion in 2024, while the financing required to align the #energy sector with the #net-zero emissions by 2050 is about $4.5 trillion annually. Which makes a significant gap between the current funding levels and the required ones to meet the defined targets. The latest report of the World Economic Forum on the energy transition addresses this issue and several challenges that must be tackled to effectively manage the energy transition investment gap : ⚡ Energy security and affordability to ensure reliable and resilient energy infrastructures and guarantee energy access for all. As energy is necessary for economic growth, stability and social well-being. ⚡ Reducing financing costs by implementing adequate financial mechanisms for critical projects such as guarantees, subsidies or loans. ⚡ De-risking innovative technologies by establishing insurance and guarantee mechanisms for innovative green technologies to encourage their integration in the market and promote investment in such areas. ⚡ Hedging off taker risk through implementing adequate mechanisms and solutions (fixed interest rate, long-term contracts swap agreements) to ensure the financial stability of companies and expand the pool of potential investors. ⚡ Mobilizing capital to developing countries through blended finance solutions including private, public, resources to reduce the investment gaps and make green energy projects more attractive and appealing to private investors.
