When I've worked with people who have Ideation in their top 5, they are amazing sources of ideas. While that is a "duh" statement, I cannot underemphasize how easily ideas flow from them! On projects - they are awesome and super appreciated at the beginning and even halfway though. As the end gets closer, Ideation folks have no issue saying "hey, I know we're almost done, but have we thought about..." Gah! That can move these folks into the doghouse if not presented with a high degree of situational awareness.

I love my #2 Ideation Strength! 💡 I especially leverage it during strategic planning initiatives, or anytime something needs to be retooled, renovated or reimagined. I've successfully used it for process improvement, enhancing programs, and thinking of creative solutions in restrictive circumstances. 🧭 Simon Sinek's description of his #1 Ideation Strength especially resonates with me: "I never think of myself as an expert, I always think of myself as a student of all things...for me, all ideas are simply moments of time on a journey, and none of them are complete."

Ideation is an amazing strength! What's interesting, though, is when individuals with high Ideation are put in highly structured/regulated roles. High levels of regulation can be stifling if the Ideator hasn't found other outlets. I've done a ton of work with leaders learning the strengths of those on their team and how to ensure the team is operating in the most effective and efficient way. How do you filter your team’s suggestions without killing their innovative spirit? You can’t say “yes” to every idea your team shares. Some ideas don’t fit the business vision, budget, or capabilities of the firm. Some may pull the client or firm way off course. You need to set expectations at the start. Let your team know that not every idea will be approved. And once approved, not every idea will make it to the next stage. We follow the same internal implementation methodology we use with our clients. At any point in development, anybody can kill the initiative. We’ll run a post-mortem to understand what went wrong and why to educate our team. But then it’s dead, and we move on. Our team understands innovation doesn’t happen in a silo. They know how hard it is to take an idea through the stages. When an idea makes it to the finish line, our whole team celebrates. This inspires the team to be more creative. If a team member wants to drive change but has struggled to get their ideas into development, they learn from previous success and find ways to present future ideas better.
