Reducing human emissions and reversing nature loss is possible but the window is closing. An additional $3 trillion in funding needs to be sourced annually to achieve an equitable climate and nature transition by 2050. The World Economic Forum’s global effort, Giving to Amplify Earth Action (GAEA), is creating a collaboration muscle to de-risk and unlock public and private finance for nature and climate, to shift markets and corporate practices at speed and scale. Having assessed hundreds of climate impact strategies and organizations, here are the 3 features we look for in high-impact climate nonprofits where your donations can have outsized impact: 1️⃣ Systems change They seek to change the laws, norms, and systems that perpetuate unsustainable emissions. This means a focus on policy and technology. Example: The Good Food Institute works to shift demand from carbon-intensive conventional meat to alternative proteins. It pushes for more government funding for research, fights for fair labeling, and helps make alternative proteins as affordable and tasty as conventional products. 2️⃣ Global impact They pursue impact strategies which can spill over from their place of action to the entire world (such as technological innovation). Example: Project InnerSpace is fast-tracking next-generation technologies that can make geothermal energy available worldwide. It works to reduce financial risks for new geothermal projects, making geothermal energy cheaper and more accessible, especially in densely populated areas in the Global South. 3️⃣ Neglected They work on sectors or strategies that receive disproportionately low attention from philanthropy and other funders. Example: Aviation and maritime shipping are challenging sectors to decarbonize and have not received much support from philanthropy in the past. Opportunity Green pushes for ambitious regulations, promotes clean fuels, encourages companies to adopt greener fleets, and works to reduce demand for air travel. Philanthropy in climate is a hot 🔥 topic. Climate philanthropy may solve the issues with the carbon removal industry but some things stand in the way. That's what Adam Fraser from Terraset joins Silas Mähner 🔍🌎 and I to chat about on our latest episode on the CleanTechies Podcast 🚀 Funders are perhaps as complicated if not more complicated than investors - although they are similarly "investing" 💰 into a solution, their objects are often more varied than the returns-oriented motivations of most investors. Compounded by the marred history of carbon removal, it's often hard to find alignment and conviction. This creates a tough dynamic that has caused only about 2% of philanthropic capital to enter the climate space. But Terraset is on a mission to change that. Interested? Check it out!👇🏽 #climate #philanthropy #carbonremoval

I know from chatting to pals, colleagues and board members that conversations about climate change are often polarising or paralysing. We've been testing a new conversation tool at SCVO which has gone down really well with staff: "I really enjoyed it, in an uncomfortable way! It brings everything together in one place - where we are, how did we get here, what do we need to do. And it's not a news channel or politicians with their own agendas - it's real people telling their own real stories about what we can do." We're holding a webinar on 26th March at 2pm to introduce this tool "The Week" and explain how it can be used to help staff, volunteers, boards and wider communities get to grips with climate change, and how to take meaningful action. Recently, Imagine5 had an interesting conversation with Mike Berners-Lee, diving into our understanding of carbon footprints and fostering honest dialogues about climate change. Just as we all understand the basics of money, understanding the carbon impact of things is crucial. The interview talks about carbon facts, including the answer to the question, 'How bad are bananas?' 🍌 Beyond that, it emphasises the vital need for open and truthful discussions on climate change, especially from our elected officials. 🎥 Watch the full interview here: https://lnkd.in/e69nehSk
