I'm thrilled to share our latest thought-piece, co-authored with Jeff Johnson and Mia Nixon at B Capital, as well as my colleague Vinay Shandal. Together, we suggest an evolution for climate tech companies from the widely used NASA Technology Readiness Level scale to the Adoption Readiness Level (ARL) framework, developed by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
The ARL framework looks beyond mere technology readiness to bring focus on commercialization and scalability factors essential for real-world climate impact.
Here’s a few ways the ARL framework can be used to support investors and operators today:
💼 For investors: ARL can be a tool in diligence, allowing a closer look at commercial readiness while homing in on specific areas for asset management (and portfolio value creation).
⚙️ For operators: It provides a framework to ensure strategy is calibrated to the essential building blocks of commercialization and scalability.
🌐 For the climate finance community: ARL offers a shared language that connects investors, operators, and partners on the path to scaling impact - (particularly important given that so many of us talk past each other with different nomenclature).
Are you an investor or operator using the ARL framework? Does the ARL framework bring greater clarity to your investment process or strategy? Are there areas it can build on?
We'd love your thoughts.
