Sharing your achievements motivates yourself and others around you. Here are my personal highlights for 2023 👇 1️⃣ Climate Work → Launched the Climate Drift Newsletter, published 55 posts, getting 1,000s of subscribers, and tripling the size of our climate network. → Spent 64 hours on free 1on1 Climate Career Mentorship sessions. → Ran a Climate Career Transition Workshop with 100+ people (most are still talking to me 😅). → Announced our Climate Career Accelerator: funneling exceptional talent into the climate economy and away from Big Oil & Gas, Wall Street, etc. (I thought it would flop…but now A-list investors, speakers, and companies are lined up, with the first cohort already including red-hot talent, ready to make an impact🔥) → I posted my introduction (which I nervously wordsmithed for a full hour) on the MCJ Collective community. My future co-founder Skander reached out the next day 🤩 2️⃣ Early Stage companies: → Helped AimHi Earth raise $1.2M in funding to grow their B2B climate education platform.  (Matthew, Sarah, Bella and Antoine are going places 🔥) → Helped Take2 raise $1M+ in funding to scale their technical education programs for people in prison. (Cameron, Nathan, and Jennifer are a constant inspiration 🙌) → My first full year as a board member - 10 board meetings for high-impact companies. → Spent 100+ hours helping early-stage companies with product and growth. 3️⃣ Family, Home, and Health: → I raise my kids bilingual. My 2-year-old said his first words in German: “More chocolate!” 😂 → My 5-year-old loves to build and create. We completed 143 art and engineering projects 🤯 → Installed an electric heat pump water heater and solar panels for my home. ROI will be ~5 and ~7 years, respectively ⚡️ → Our family biked 1,537 miles on our cargo e-bike (2 kids in the back), replacing 80% of short-trip car rides. → I surfed 1,951 waves, and made it 3.5 times into the ocean per week 🏄♂️ → I lost ~10 pounds through regular exercise and stopping to eat before feeling full. → We cut down our meat consumption by 70% (but I mostly replaced those calories with chocolate 🤦♂️) → I received a 3-year entrepreneur work visa for New Zealand as part of the Edmund Hillary Fellowship (EHF) 😍 (thank you Rosalie, Kelly, Paula, Michelle, and the team for all that you do 🙏) Small waves today. #ClimateCareerWeek (https://bit.ly/3J0bRLP) was incredibly inspiring, uniting climate job seekers from across the world, including many mid-career climate change job seekers. We need to build on this momentum! In the US, President Biden's #ClimateCorps Program provides fantastic opportunities for early career professionals seeking roles in the climate space: https://bit.ly/4amf56Z At the same time, A HUGE NUMBER OF MID-CAREER PROFESSIONALS ARE LOOKING TO TRANSITION TO CLIMATE CAREERS. These professionals are ready and willing to put their amazing talents and experience to work BUT LACKING CLIMATE CHANGE EXPERIENCE. Most mid-career climate change jobs require a minimum of 5-10 years of direct climate change experience. This can be a pretty tough barrier. I know others are starting to think of this. I saw similar posts from Jakob Larson and Katie Herod which inspired this post and idea. ❤️ Wouldn't it be fantastic to have MID-CAREER CLIMATE CORPS PROGRAMS? Perhaps a year-long paid leadership development fellowship program that gives mid-career professionals a crash course in climate change science, solutions, policies, economics + significant real-world climate project experience so they can operate successfully in this space. And climate employer partners, willing to hire fellows who have completed this program, into mid-career climate roles. Perhaps this could be accomplished by a government agency, university, or NGO (with employer partners) or a collaboration? Climatebase and Terra.do 12-week Climate Fellowships are a fantastic start! It would be great to have employer partners with these programs to then hire on mid-career professionals for paid 1 year programs to continue their learning + hands-on project experience while engaging them at a higher level for their strategy + project management or technical experience. I love Environmental Defense Fund's #ClimateCorps program (https://lnkd.in/g6FbGm6z) which gives graduate students project-based experience that makes them highly marketable in climate careers. So something similar for mid-career professionals who are not students that would give them significant project-based experience. 🤔 Does anything like this exist? Dear Fellow 90's Grad, Do you ever feel like you're navigating choppy waters in today's job market? Trust me, you're not alone. As someone who embarked on their career journey in the era of dial-up internet and floppy disks, I understand the unique challenges we face amidst the whirlwind of technological advancement. But here's the thing – our journey doesn't end with the turn of the millennium. It's just taking a different route, one that demands adaptability and resilience in the face of rapid change. Sure, the landscape may seem daunting, with terms like AI, blockchain, and machine learning dominating the conversation. But let's not forget the invaluable skills we bring to the table – skills honed through years of real-world experience, problem-solving prowess, and good old-fashioned perseverance.
