Sustainability innovation along with new quantum technologies are two huge areas to keep our eyes on.

What is a reverse pitch? Industry partnerships are crucial to supporting startups. They can be first customers and early adopters of emerging technology and services. They can also be important collaborators in making sure an innovation meets a market need and has a clear commercialization pathway. One way to make sure innovators and startups are getting connected to those industry partners and priorities is through a reverse pitch event. It's an opportunity for partners from that sector (government, private business, or other established organizations and experts) to lay out their needs, technology, or projects they are developing, and their wish list for solutions that could come from or developed with startups. Grid Catalyst hosted a cleantech reverse pitch on March 20 with Bill Weber (3M), Al Innes (Minnesota Pollution Control Agency), Jeremy Lenz (national water and technology expert), Ellie Rabine (City of St. Louis Park), and Richard Graves, FAIA (Center for Sustainable Building Research/University of Minnesota). They laid out the priorities for their sectors and organizations and connected with founders at the event. A couple of weeks ago I came across a post by Max Werny, from Zero Carbon, on the importance of TEA - techno-economic analysis for greentech startups. I’ve done more than a few TEAs myself, but found this one clear, focused on cleantech/greentech and possessing a couple of links to highly useful sources. There are specific data on hydrogen assumptions and pricing, electricity pricing, and scaling assumptions. All are very useful, especially as they give you a peek at what values your investors will be using when evaluating your startup. There are also tools for estimating your FOAK and NOAK costs. One thing I would disagree with is the use of LCOE for estimating power prices. LCOE is a theoretical concept, usually out of touch with reality. You can use LCOE to show that your product is strategically competitive. But when you brew your TEA, you need to be as close to facts on the ground as possible. So I would recommend ditching LCOE in favor of current market data. So, check this out! I’m currently updating my TEA for our heating-as-a-service startup using a Planet-A template.
