Dubai just experienced an intense weather event that puts a spotlight on an emerging global trend – extreme weather conditions likely spurred by climate change. 🌧️⚠️ On Tuesday, due to heavy rainfall and unprecedented flooding, Dubai International Airport had to divert all incoming flights. This "exceptional weather" not just disrupted the usual bustle of the city but echoed the persistent changes in our global climate patterns. Just last year, while living in Dubai, I faced similar weather anomalies. A place known for its opulent sunshine, suddenly cloaked in torrential rains, reminded me of the power of nature and the urgent need for climate resilience. Dubai's sister city, Abu Dhabi, even recorded its highest daily rainfall ever during this period. The statistics are telling - climate change is here, and it’s affecting us all. The UAE, along with regions in Bahrain and Qatar, is witnessing increased flooding risks, which scientists believe will only escalate. Despite advanced infrastructure, the sight of Dubai's flooded streets is a wake-up call that climate change spares no one, irrespective of geographic or economic status. To all the travelers and professionals out there: let's start conversations around sustainable travel practices. How can we, as global citizens, contribute to minimizing our climate impact while on the move? Few days back, we were having a team iftar in a park in Dubai. It was a bit far from the city, very calm & full of natural beauties, as you can see and hear in the video. After coming back from there, I had a realization about carbon emissions and global warming. This place is roughly 30 km away from the city, but the temperature difference is almost 5°C. The park was freezing cold, whereas I was feeling hot in the city. I believe, we all can relate to this. Whenever we went out of the city, it feels so relaxing & feeling cooler, no matter what's the season is. Even though the place we live isn't an industrial area, it's just a city with cars, buses, lights, our cooking, etc. If these can create this much difference, imagine how much more we are creating every day, every hour, everywhere around the world! Actually, this issue of carbon emissions and global warming is far, far more dangerous than we have realized. We should have more concern and be responsible for our day-to-day consumptions & activities. Not only for us, but also for our future generations. Let's speak up. Let's be responsible. Let's cultivate a better future together. #carbonemissioms #climatechange #globalwarming #dubaipark #cropee #iftar #ramadan #dubai

As the UAE prepares to host an influx of visitors for high-profile events like the COP28 climate talks and the F1 Grand Prix, hotel occupancy in Abu Dhabi and Dubai is projected to hit new highs. The usual busy season for hospitality and tourism - typically between November and January - has unfolded much earlier than expected for some due to F1, COP28, and other major industry events being held at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

The direct impacts of climate change on aviation are nunerous: 🌊 Sea level rise submerging low-lying airports 💨 Increased turbulence due to energy in the atmosphere ☀️ Heatwaves preventing aircraft from taking off without reducing their passenger/cargo payload. 🔥 Wildfires affecting popular tourist destinations (Greece and Hawaii in particular last year). 🌳 Loss of the natural habitats and biodiversity that many tourists travel to experience 🌧️ Intense flooding is another impact illustrated by the scenes at Dubai airport this week, leading to it closing. 👉 Read more about our concerns here: https://lnkd.in/eZweY-Az 👉 Join Safe Landing if you'd like to contribute towards a community empowering each other to navigate a safer flightpath for our industry: https://lnkd.in/e-2Grzae
In the last 24hrs, Dubai had as much rain as it typically does in a year. The result? Floods, which closed the airport So, when some of you ask how climate change will impact aviation, here you go. #timetoact For background on how DXB itself is building a sustainable future, check out my Sustainability In The Air interview with CEO Paul Griffiths https://lnkd.in/eta-AHdw #airports #travel

Impressive video! DXB underwater. 2 years of average rainfall so far in a few days. The city infrastructure is not equiped for this. Meteorologists pinpoint the cause of this rare event to a shift in the jet stream, a high-altitude air current that flows from west to east. This shift brought unusually moist air from the Indian Ocean to the Arabian Peninsula, an anomaly that may be linked to the broader changes in global climate patterns. "The rain has shown us that no place is immune from the effects of climate change," said Dubai’s Mayor, Ahmed Al Maktoum. This recent weather anomaly in Dubai serves as a reminder of the urgent need for global action on climate change. It underscores the importance of international cooperation in reducing carbon emissions and investing in sustainable practices to safeguard our planet for future generations. Low Carbon Intensity SAF anyone? 🤣 #GEVO #SAF #climatechange #greenfuel #timetoact #sustainability #carbonneutral

🌍 Climate Change and the Unprecedented Rains in Dubai 🌧️ Dear LinkedIn community, The heavy rains in Dubai have been shocking for all of us. This extreme weather is a clear sign of climate change affecting our world right now. Climate change has altered our planet's weather patterns, leading to more frequent and intense extreme weather events like the heavy rains we witnessed in Dubai. Warmer temperatures in the Arabian Sea have contributed to increased moisture in the atmosphere, resulting in heavier rainfall and flooding in areas unaccustomed to such weather conditions. Some of the images from Dubai are deeply unsettling. https://lnkd.in/gzCuSafs It's a reminder that we need to act on climate change. Let's support sustainable practices and work together for a safer, greener future. #ClimateChange #DubaiRains #SustainableFuture #ClimateResilience 🌍🌧️

Amidst the chaos of the unprecedented floods in the Dubai, one thing stands out - a car is cruising while many others have broken down. This raises an important question about the future of energy resources - should we continue relying on oil or should we switch to electric? It's worth reflecting on the natural consequences for us to recap what's COP28's statement by lobbyists, "I am factual and I respect the science, and there is no science out there, or no scenario out there, that says that the phase-out of fossil fuels is what’s going to achieve 1.5 (degrees)." Does the natural environment's reaction to this statement signal an alarming situation? #consumeresponsibility #csr #globalwarming #climatecrisis

Meanwhile in Dubai: A Wake-Up Call? ➠ Dubai vs. Nature ➝ Despite advanced infrastructure, the city succumbed to nature's fury. ➝ Rooftops blown away, darkness covered the skies—described as apocalyptic. ➠ Weather Manipulation Backlash? ➝ UAE's longstanding practice of weather manipulation—choosing when it rains or shines. ➝ Is nature hitting back? A balance or a battle we're unprepared for? ➠ Humor as a Coping Mechanism ➝ News comments on using "floating boat taxis instead of flying ones" highlight the use of dark humor in times of helplessness. ➝ Is laughing in the face of disaster a necessary relief or a sign of denial? ➠ The Future Outlook ➝ If such extreme weather events become the norm, what does that mean for global infrastructure and our way of life? ➝ Are we prepared for an era where engineered weather might dictate more than just convenience? Dubai's encounter with a catastrophic storm raises questions about the sustainability of weather manipulation and our readiness for nature's unpredictability. How we adapt and respond may very well define our resilience in the face of escalating climate challenges. P.S.: I had been living in Dubai for some time, but now wanted to go to #Token2049 but am now kind of happy I did not go… // Repost this ⇄ //

Humanity needs fresh ideas and new political faces, representing mankind as a whole instead of fragmented political interests! The world has to grow together in order to urgently address the issues that impact all of us like conflict, climate change, inequality and forced migration together. This we can only do without any dominance, as equals. Collectively in Solidarity. www.convergence.ngo & www.pax.ngo.
This is Dubai yesterday. A warmer climate holds more moisture, meaning these events will happen more often. I experienced something similar in Sydney in March 2022. It was frightening. Many people lost their lives, many more lost their homes or possessions. Getting insurance became much more difficult for those affected. We’re still putting 50 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent into the atmosphere each year (and growing), so these events are just going to become more common. Nahel Belgherze on X (formerly Twitter) said: “Dubai International Airport 🇦🇪 has recorded nearly 160 mm (6.3 inches) of rain in the last 24 hours. For context, most of the Dubaï metro typically averages 3.5 inches per year. This is truly a historic event for the area.” (https://lnkd.in/gpSDC3hx) #dubai #climatechange

As our planet grapples with the undeniable effects of climate change, it's crucial to spotlight its impact on regions worldwide. Today, I want to shed light on the alarming repercussions of climate change on floods in Dubai and advocate for urgent action towards sustainability. The recent surge in extreme weather events, including flooding, is a stark reminder of the urgent need to address climate change. Dubai, a vibrant city known for its innovation and resilience, is not immune to these challenges. Rising sea levels, changing precipitation patterns, and increased intensity of storms are all contributing factors to the heightened risk of flooding in this dynamic metropolis. As we witness the consequences of climate change firsthand, it's imperative for individuals, businesses, and governments to come together and embrace sustainable practices. From investing in renewable energy sources to implementing water conservation strategies, there are myriad ways we can mitigate the impact of climate change and build a more resilient future for Dubai and beyond. However, while ambitious targets like the net zero goal of 2050 are a step in the right direction, we must ask ourselves: is it enough? Climate change is an urgent crisis that demands immediate and concerted action. While setting targets is crucial, we must also ensure that they are accompanied by robust strategies and actionable plans to achieve them effectively. We cannot afford to be complacent. It's time to amplify our efforts, accelerate our transition to a low-carbon economy, and prioritize sustainability in every aspect of our lives. By working together, we can not only mitigate the impact of climate change on floods in Dubai but also pave the way for a more sustainable and prosperous future for generations to come. Let's act now, for the sake of our planet and all who call it home. Together, we can make a difference. #ClimateChange #Sustainability #DubaiFloods
