🇯🇲 Hurricane Beryl, now a Category 4 storm, is approaching Jamaica after causing destruction across several southeast Caribbean islands. Jamaica's Prime Minister has declared a major disaster and implemented a curfew. 🌀 Beryl has already caused significant damage and fatalities in Grenada, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Venezuela. As it moves west, areas including the Cayman Islands and Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula are under warnings, with Texas advised to stay alert for potential impacts. 🗺 The map shows Beryl's wind field as well as where hurricane warnings, tropical storm warning, hurricane watches, and tropical storm watches have been declared along coastlines. These are just a few of the innovative risk visualization layers Earthvisionz can provide when a storm is approaching. 🔮 What’s next? Portions of South Texas are now within Beryl’s forecast cone, and it could reach the state over the weekend or early Monday. However, there is still high uncertainty regarding Beryl's exact path and intensity as it approaches the Gulf Coast. After impacting Jamaica, Beryl's trajectory is influenced by a large area of high pressure over the U.S. If this high-pressure area remains strong, Beryl is likely to make landfall in Belize or Mexico and stay mostly over land. 🌐 Learn more about how Earthvisionz can help you with risk management when a storm like Hurricane Beryl comes through: https://lnkd.in/g4rnq_Pb and schedule a demo! #HurricaneBeryl #Category4Storm #Jamaica #DisasterAlert #YucatanPeninsula #TexasAlert #Earthvisionz #RiskManagement #StormVisualization #WeatherUpdate #EmergencyPreparedness #StormForecast #StaySafe

Sustainable Food Systems Policy Expert/ Land and Forests/Founder and Consultant at Food and Climate/International Policy/Gender and Inclusion/Non for Profit Management
I have lived through 4 hurricane seasons on the Caribbean Island of Jamaica, including during the Covid total island closure. This is why I have been following hurricane Beryl for a few days now with an increasing worry for friends, for the agricultural damage, for the landslides cutting off villages and towns, for the destruction that these winds that have grown into category 5 hurricane will carry. From June to November, that's what all do in the islands: hurricane news watch. As climate change has made the frequency and the strength of hurricanes that more potent, this is my real-life reminder of why we need climate finance for Loss and Damage and soil restoration as well as how badly we need to remember to include the Caribbean people themselves in the design of climate and food security adaptation projects. #Jamaica #LossandDamage #climatecrisis #climatefinance #soilrestoration #foodsystems #Carribbean #foodsystemstransformation #hurricanes #reforestation

Hurricane Beryl strengthens to Category 5, headed to Jamaica #bne #bneEditorsPicks #bneGreen #climatecrisis #Beryl #hurricane Hurricane Beryl intensified again into a "potentially catastrophic" Category 5 storm on July 2 as it moved across the eastern Caribbean, headed for Jamaica after downing power lines and flooding streets in the western Caribbean islands. Beryl is the earliest ever recorded hurricane in the Caribbean seas after it strengthened from a tropical storm to a Category 4 hurricane in a mere 42 hours. Another hurricane of this strength, this early in the season, has only been seen once before in 1933, which is the only other time a hurricane has appeared east of the Caribbean. The average date for the first hurricane of the season is August 11. Scientists have attributed its rapid formation to record warm sea temperatures that are a result of the accelerating climate crisis.

Changes to how hurricane/storm tracks will be presented in 2024. "The changes aim to address shortcomings in how people perceive a storm’s threats based on the boundaries of the track forecast cone, which only depicts the potential track of the center of a storm and not the storm’s hazards." https://lnkd.in/ebk8cj25
The hurricane cone graphic is changing this year. Here’s why experts say it’s needed
