Managing Director - Strategy and Sustainability - Marsh Advisory (Marsh/Oliver Wyman/Guy Carpenter/Mercer) - Specialising in strategy, economic opportunity and growth with sustainability considerations.
The future of aviation is beset with polarising challenges. The world has to balance anticipated dramatic flight growth, and the freedom this brings to economies, and in particular, developing nations, against a tough to decarbonise infrastructure and fleet profile. At the recent inaugural Marsh Aviation Global Summit I spoke on the challenges of the #fundingstrategy, #greeninfrastructure opportunities and some of the likely #greenfleet and #smartairport advancements which will balance and drive the sectors path to CO2 reduction. I was joined by my colleagues William Healy and Ed Woolcock and along with industry leaders we debated and predicted future trends. You can read more in the article below and if you'd like to discuss further please do reach out.

I just listened to the latest episode of Climate Rising, and it is a fascinating deep dive into the challenges and innovation opportunities in decarbonizing the aviation sector. Kudos to Mike Toffel at HBS and Robin Riedel at McKinsey's Center for Future Mobility for giving us a great roadmap to this complex topic. It will be interesting to see how airlines, planes, fuel, and airports transform in the future. #climate #business #decarbonization

The use of 'sustainable aviation fuels' — or #SAFs — is considered one of the leading ways to begin lowering the environmental impact of aviation. The problem is that identifying which SAFs are truly sustainable amid the evolving landscape of feedstocks, technologies and policies is no simple task 🤔 We teamed up with Principles for Responsible Investment to shed light on the various types of alternative aviation fuels that exist and how they differ in terms of both production and emissions, while offering key insights for investors engaging companies on emerging fuels and new technologies 💡 Explore our infographic below 👇 and check out the full report on our website https://bit.ly/4cQUHMH And don't forget to reach out if you want to hear more about our aviation work at Climate Catalyst 🛫 #sustainableaviation #aviation #energytransition #investment #climateaction #climatechange

Enjoying a sunny winter afternoon — fairly rare in Cleveland — and thought, what better way to end the work day than with some *positive* climate news? Thought I’d share it with you all, in case you’re not subscribed to Bill McKibben’s ever-wonderful newsletter. A snippet: “The point is that what we’re leveraging now is human intelligence, and that is a remarkable expanding commodity. If you rely on oil, there’s less to be found each year, and it’s harder to find (not impossible, as the frackers have proved, but hard). That’s why the price goes up. But with solar and wind and battery technology, it’s not the commodity but the design that matters, and those are coming constantly—this innovative iteration keeps making these technologies cleaner, more affordable, and more efficient. That’s the useful part of capitalism—and indeed of human nature.” Yay for positive human input. (And for the pace of change that “keeps confounding experts, who consistently underestimate the potential and exponential growth of batteries.”) I like to think we collectively underestimate the progress we’re making in MOST areas. Aviation comes to mind. Did you catch that a transatlantic flight recently ran on 100% sustainable aviation fuel? It’s not a complete solution, but it’s progress worth celebrating. And if you look, you’ll find it — progress worth celebrating — almost everywhere. #climatetech

Earlier this year, I took on the leadership of our Aviation programme at Climate Catalyst ✈ What does that mean? ✊ I get to work with a team of amazingly talented colleagues who are driven by tackling aviation's huge climate impact (Emily Hickson, Tierney Smith, Madeleine Hill, Sabrina Ahmed, Aleksandra C., Ali Sutherland, Naomi Ages, Harsheen Patel, Alex Burch, Saskia Heijnen) 📚 I've learnt about exciting new solutions that could begin to put the sector on a credible net zero pathway - and it will need them all... 🌍 I am meeting a whole host of inspiring people from diverse organisations, all working tirelessly to drive action in this critical transport industry 🌟 I am part of a collective effort to see ambition raised and impact delivered on real emissions reductions from aviation! Our team is currently focusing on how we can support European civil society's advocacy efforts through creative communications campaigning, whilst building investor awareness and engagement on the different types of 'sustainable aviation fuels' - which we know can vary drastically in terms of sustainability and scalability - and on the need to accelerate zero-emission aviation technologies. You're likely to see a lot more aviation content from me, so if you'd like to have a conversation about why this topic is so important do drop me a message, I'd love to chat! 🙌 #sustainableaviation #SAF #decarbonisation #netzero #aviation #climateaction #climatechange #hydrogen

Getting things done. SME for aviation, especially marketing & distribution, IT, A-CDM, disruption management, sustainable aviation.
A recent poll by one of my many quality aviation contacts in my opinion reflects very much the misled thought channels in aviation (and investors alike). #sustainablepractices" is equalized to #fossilfreeflying, it's not understood that #impactinvesting is the basis for short- and long-term profitability. And that there are 17SDGs, I addressed in "Greenjacking and Cherrypicking": https://lnkd.in/eq7zS4mF Today, an #impactinvestor wrote me a(nother) message full about prejudice(s) and boxes, having never even looked at our numbers, implying low margins and competition: #shortsightedthinking. #prideandprejudice If done right, #sustainability is the source of our profits, it's USPs and an #industrydisruptor (not just within aviation)! #livinginabox It reminds me of my two images about the #heresy of #fossilfreeaviation and #sustainableaviation and #aviationprofits (and the world is flat), as well as Lubomila's quote in 2021 questioning if "our obsession with technology will slow down the green transition". The diversity of global aviation standards creates a unique challenge - how does efficient ground support adapt to various international needs? The aviation industry is a vast and diverse arena where regional peculiarities influence the types of equipment and operational standards. Whether you're a pilot orienting for a smooth touchdown, or an engineer implementing cutting-edge technologies for seamless flight operations, these variances can pose an imminent challenge. For MROs endeavoring to uphold aircraft reliability, for FBOs striving for proficient ground services, to decision-makers in airlines and military installations, the regional disparity in equipment standards poses a common concern. The extensive diversity in equipment, fuel types, and environmental policies from region to region threatens to disrupt the harmony of global operations. Without a strategic approach, this yields operational inefficiencies and missed opportunities for progress. To make matters even more complex, the demand for green alternatives is budding under pressure from airport authorities seeking to go entirely green. Embrace the diversity, and cater to it. Prioritize familiarity with the equipment and fuel types specific to each region you operate, this aids selection of suitable ground support. Keep abreast the environmental policies, and start strategizing transition plans towards green alternatives – remember, the move to greener solutions is not just a matter of compliance, but is also a way to contribute to the global fight against climate change. Subsequently, adapt, modernize, and rethink ground support operations in line with these idiosyncrasies to ensure sustainable success. Remember, be proactive, be informed, and be versatile. Our industry thrives in shifting paradigms – that's the thrill of this ever-evolving world of aviation.
