Our Programme and Risk Director, Chip Cunliffe spoke to Climatelinks about the importance of coastal blue carbon ecosystems such as saltmarshes, seagrass meadows, and, of course, mangroves - and their ability to sequester up to five times more carbon than terrestrial forests! 🌱     As ORRAA is the anchor partner of the Costal Resilience, Carbon, and Conservation Finance (C3F) activity under the USAID Climate Finance for Development Accelerator (USAID CFDA) we understand the importance of blue carbon projects.     As Chip mentions in the interview, the blue carbon market is steadily growing, leading to strengthened livelihoods and improvements in biodiversity conservation. “For example, the Vida Manglar project (Cispatá Bay, Colombia) has reinvested 92 percent of the revenue from credit sales back into the project to expand its impact.” 🌎 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/exzNHKiX        #ClimateFinance #BlueEconomy #CoastalResilience #NaturePositive 

🌊 New study: Marine Protected Areas not only preserve ocean life but also benefit local communities. Here’s a glimpse into the findings: 🐠 Marine protected areas in the Mesoamerican Reef boosted local income by 33% in communities nearby. 🎣 No-take zones in MPAs contributed to a 27% increase in fish biomass, benefiting fishing activities. 👧 Children near MPAs were half as likely to experience stunted growth, linking conservation efforts to improved health. ⚖️ Balancing conservation and community needs is crucial. Proper governance and community involvement are key to successful marine protection projects. 🔍 More research is needed to understand the full impact of MPAs on different community groups. 🌳 𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘆!   Today we celebrate the major role this ecosystem plays in sheltering biodiversity, in slowing climate change and in the livelihoods of the communities that depend on it.   It is important to better understand their influence on climate change mitigation and the impact of their disappearance. BlueSeeds is working alongside the European Space Agency - ESA and a consortium led by i-Sea on the ESA Coastal Blue Carbon Project. The project aims to produce comprehensive and precise tools to estimate blue carbon storage evolution in mangroves and other Blue Carbon Ecosystems (BCEs) to guide equitable climate policies and improve conservation management.   Mangroves are also a source of livelihood for many communities around the world. In West Africa, where we work, urban development and agriculture are eating away at mangroves, parcel to parcel. Our West African Mangrove (WAM) project—which we are running with the IUCN thanks to support of The World Bank—aims to empower local communities to be independent in the selling of carbon credits generated by mangrove conservation so they can finance their activities.   Through these projects, we hope to see the people working to protect mangroves become more autonomous in managing their project, so that these ecosystems can regain their place in coastal regions.   #WorldMangroveDay #MangroveDay #Mangrove #Mangroves #BlueCarbon #Environment #ClimateChange #Conservation #NbS #NatureBasedSolutions
