On February 1, Dr. Mark Taubman will complete his nine-year term as URMC’s CEO and Dean of the School of Medicine and Dentistry, capping two decades of leadership at URMC -- leading our Cardiology division, the Department of Medicine, Dean of the School of Medicine and Dentistry, and finally, as our CEO and Dean. On Dr. Taubman’s watch, our UR Medicine health system grew in size, scope and quality. Our medical and nursing schools became larger and more selective, and research funding grew. We invested in forward-leaning facilities to meet tomorrow’s needs. He changed our inclusivity trajectory—naming more women to leadership positions and making unprecedented gains in student diversity. Today, our workforce is more inclusive, equipped with tools to make URMC an exemplar of high-quality, equitable care. Perhaps his crowning achievement was leading the medical, operational and financial integration of our teaching, research and patient care missions.  That’s because Dr. Taubman, like the Medical Center’s founders, is a clinician-scientist who believes in the power of discovery and learning to transform the patient experience. He knows that treating disease will never be as powerful as curing or preventing disease. And that’s the very reason academic medicine exists! SCO WELCOMES APOLOGY FROM THE CANADIAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION   The Canadian Medical Association made a long overdue public apology for past harms to Indigenous people inflicted by medical professionals.   “While we welcome this apology, it still does little to repair the decades of damage done to our peoples by a discriminatory system and the people within it,” stated SCO Grand Chief Jerry Daniels. “My sincere hope is the CMA will build on this day, and that we can finally all work together to close the well documented 11 year and growing gap in life expectancy between First Nation citizens and all others living in what is now known as Manitoba.”   Researchers found the CMA used outdated, racist terms in its communications. CMA staff also concluded that some doctors participated in or failed to stop medical experiments on First Nation patients, and forced sterilizations of First Nation women as well as the apprehension of First Nation newborns at hospitals.   This apology is the second by a Canadian medical organization in as many years. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba apologized in January of last year for failing to adequately address Indigenous-specific racism by medical practitioners, and for the intergenerational trauma, suffering, poor health outcomes, and death that this has caused.   “It’s these very reasons that have spurred us into action when it comes to transforming health care deliver for our peoples,” added Grand Chief Daniels. “We all need to work collaboratively and establish a new health care model where First Nations leadership and health care professionals have increased self-administration, self-determination, and self-governance authority. Then and only then will we create the best possible outcomes for our Anishinaabe and Dakota citizens.”   You can learn more about SCO’s Health Transformation efforts on our website at https://lnkd.in/gZGjJfRU   #SCOINCMB #CMA #HealthTransformation #CanadianMedicalAssociation #Healthcare #Apology #EveryChildMatters

The University of Georgia retained Tripp Umbach to assess the feasibility and potential economic impact of establishing an independent medical school at UGA. The findings presented within the report indicate that Georgia has a critical physician shortage in a large, underserved region. This healthcare crisis must be addressed.
