AIRPOWER INDEPENDENT OF RUNWAYS ... The key to supporting Taiwan Consider this Concept of Operations (CONOP) for the United States Air Force: - An aircraft generation squadron operating with the US Marine Corps stays mobile in the first island chain, going from hide site to hide site. China is unable to solve the "SCUD problem," and squadron personnel stay safe. - The squadron is sent a Low-Probability of Intercept (LPI) "execute message" from the joint command center, which includes preplanned parameters (number of aircraft, payload, rendezvous points, etc.). - The squadron executes a meticulously planned operation, moving to a pre-surveyed road on the island and initiating aircraft generation. This process involves unpacking the aircraft, assembling the wing structures, and inserting the mission modules and weapons. - The two launch teams move to their positions. The actual length between them is classified, but it is <<8000 feet. They put the first aircraft on the trolleys and prepare to launch. - Both teams employ the trolley technique to launch their aircraft. This method involves launching left to right, then right to left, and repeating as necessary to get the aircraft in the air. It's a coordinated dance of precision and timing, honed through multiple exercises. Spares are ready to fill in as needed. - The aircraft fly to their pre-planned execution points, updating their mission software en route. - The joint command center matches them with targets of opportunity. These aircraft execute as directed. - The aircraft that survive fly to prioritized recovery zones, cut their engines, deploy their parachutes, and float to the ground or water. - Recovery teams take these aircraft, do minor repairs as necessary, and then give them to the Marines logistics teams, who deliver them to the launch teams. - Repeat x10000 - With airpower support, the Taiwan Defense Forces repel the Chinese assault on their country (yes, I said country). The United States remains the preferred security partner in Asia, which has huge benefits for our economic health and well-being. What is going on with the future of Air Superiority? There have been many rumors about the fate of the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) program, a.k.a. the sixth-generation fighter. Is it being canceled? If so, why? Is it a budget-driven decision, a threat-driven one, or a bit of both? If this program is canceled, what does that say about the role of air power in joint warfare? Are we in danger of becoming an isolationist nation simply because we cannot modernize our military forces? Thank you to J.J. It is great to see the work of the Special Competitive Studies Project - SCSP being applied by journalists like Shashank Joshi to help us understand what is happening in our world and what it means. I'm grateful to be involved in the project's activities, especially as I get to collaborate with gifted, service-minded people like Ylli Bajraktari, Mick Ryan, AM, Paul L., Luke Vannurden, Ylber B. and so many others.

I have found this observation by Adam Grant to be true. When we transitioned to #hybridwork in the #pandemic and then stuck with it, I had many #momswhowork tell me that it gave them to flexibility to work and also be present at home. Many supervisors are uncomfortable with hybrid work, but I hope that they can take a balanced view of the benefits along with the challenges.

This was a huge week for the United States Air Force. The organizational changes announced by Frank Kendall III, Dave Allvin, & Chance Saltzman on Monday at the Air & Space Forces Association convention are the most consequential since the Cold War. The Air Force has been #disrupted. Doubling down on old ways of doing business is not an option. We are out of time. These changes are absolutely necessary. At the same time, change of this magnitude is always difficult. There are tough times ahead as the Air Force navigates the journey from where it is to where it must go. In the long run, an institution reflects the character of its people. There was a time when #Airmen built a service that was fearless and forward-looking. They were a group of disrupters, and they created a legacy unmatched in warfare. On my optimistic days, I am confident that we can recapture the bold spirit. On my pessimistic days, I worry that we have many who are comfortable reliving the glory of the past rather than proactively shaping an uncertain future. I hope my optimistic side is right.
