Gatekeeping eThekwini. Gatekeeping and access to networks are topics in Durban at the moment. I should say networking plays a crucial role, especially when complemented by talent and skills. The ability to expand your network is enhanced when paired with specific skills. Solely relying on access to influential individuals can lead to gatekeeping. Your whole hustle cannot be purely based on ukuthi wena wazi bani. In such scenarios, individuals offer little beyond proximity to key figures, fostering an environment where they prioritize connections over skills or merit, often acting as middlemen. You have to get things done through them. In many cases, political affiliations and memberships have historically carried weight, influencing decision-making processes. Those aligned with specific political parties often find themselves at the forefront of opportunities, becoming gatekeepers by association. Keeping resources to their circles. Unfortunately, this trend can sideline promising projects based on merit, especially in the creative sector. The whole industry then shifts towards alignment-based gatekeeping … you have to be part of the crew to benefit and there are people looking to score yet they add no value whatsoever. This messes up the industry and the importance of fostering merit-based opportunities and collaborations. It's crucial to recognize and address how these networks can limit innovation and diversity within the creative sector. We love this industry and I wish it could heal very soon. Create opportunities so that the deserving can succeed in the execution of their own visions. #Gatekeeping VS #Networking
