The beginning of a new school year is always a time of anticipation, excitement, and a little bit of anxiety—especially for our 9th graders stepping into the Upper School for the first time. Today, as we welcomed the Class of 2028, the energy in the building was palpable. It was a reminder of why schools exist: to be filled with the curiosity, ambition, and boundless potential of our students. This morning, we kicked off 9th grade orientation, and our Grade Level Dean invited advisors and a few administrators to share their advice and joys for the year ahead. The responses were thoughtful, and I wanted to pass them along: ✅ Stay organized and keep your stuff neat. ✅ Be curious, not judgmental—embrace each new experience. ✅ Use your free periods wisely—get schoolwork done, but also make time to build relationships with your peers and teachers. ✅ Practice self-compassion as challenges arise—you are capable of growth. ✅ Ask questions—don’t sit in discomfort, seek out the answers. ✅ We’re excited to see you thrive and discover who you’re becoming. These words are more than just advice; they are invitations to our students to fully engage in the Upper School. Whether in the classroom, on the field, or in clubs and activities, there’s a place for everyone to thrive. When it was my turn to speak, I expressed how glad I am that our students are finally here. Schools feel empty and purposeless without them. I know some might be feeling a bit nervous, maybe even stressed, about starting high school. It’s easy to get caught up in thinking that we expect them to be perfect from day one. But that’s not the case at all. I made it clear that we’re here to support them every step of the way. What really matters to me isn’t where they came from—it’s how they’ll make the most of their time here at Wellington. This school offers countless opportunities, and I encouraged them to take full advantage to realize their potential. Here’s the advice I shared (inspired by my colleague Jeff Terwin), which I hope resonates with anyone reading this: 💡 Be present. These are some of the best years of your life—don’t let them slip by without fully engaging in the moment. 💡Invest in yourself. Your parents have made sacrifices to send you here—honor that by giving your best effort in everything you do. 💡Lead with your values. Leadership isn’t about telling others what to do; it’s about having the conviction to do the right thing, even when it’s hard. 💡Own your journey. You’ll make mistakes—it’s part of growing. What’s important is how you respond and learn from them. At Wellington, we’re all about creating communities where joy and challenge go hand in hand. We’re here to help each student grow into confident, competent, and connected learners. And to the Class of 2028, I’m excited to see how you’ll grow and contribute to our community.

Old School… Literally   The Young Men’s School(tm) is now open!   I’ve spent the last year contemplating, and gathering materials and ideas for my pet project: The Young Men’s School(tm). You probably could not underestimate how precious and special this project is to me, or how eager and thrilled I am to finally be getting things underway. Essentially, I have cultivated the YMS’s approach to be the program that “I wish I’d had” when I was a young man, showing a path of greater illumination and opportunity to live with meaning and experience success.   Throughout this Summer I am accepting enrollments into the YMS’s pilot program.  As soon as (and as long as) I have at least one student enrolled, I will carry-on teaching throughout the Summer (so there is an opportunity here to get some highly individualized attention). Here are some details: <>  Virtual/Online meetings/classes; <>  Maximum 12 students enrolled at any time; <>  Tuition fees reduced by one-third until Fall; <> Initial, “audit” week for all new students at no additional cost (after $50 enrollment fee); <> Enrollment commitment requirement is only 1 week at a time (with up-to full Summer enrollments possible); <> Young men aged 12-20 are eligible to enroll; <> Class meetings are Mondays & Thursdays for 1 hour 20 minutes, and Saturdays for 50 minutes; <> Students are expected to meet on their own every day for at least 20 minutes (except Sundays); <> Parents/Guardians can meet with me at any time, and must agree to regular, bi-weekly meetings with me; <> The Curriculum:  According to the interests & aptitudes of the student, following the tenet that “one learns where one’s heart desires.” From the point of a student’s interests, then it’s possible to integrate basic learning (reading, writing, language, grammar, math, science, physics, history, sociology, philosophy, biology, health, etc.), as all paths of development and learning require some level of exposure to every basic body of knowledge.   The underlying focus of everything being taught focuses on “life skills.” Basically, this aspect of the curriculum is along the lines of imparting the wisdom of an older, more experienced person to younger, less experience counterparts. This aspect is reflective of the notion we all have, where we reflect on how little we actually say we learned of what we were taught in school. I will do all I can to consistently convey perspectives, attitudes and “lessons” about how to conduct oneself with dignity, confidence & purpose. To that end, another major component will be about learning to interact, respect, cooperate, encourage & contribute to the group constructively; <> Costs: $50 enrollment / first week free / $62.29 per week until Fall semester; <> Commitment: As long (or short) as you wish; New student’s start on Mondays; Students need Internet access & Zoom Meetings application; <> Getting Started: Email me directly at essary@inbox.com, and we’ll arrange a time to talk.

Have you ever heard of unschooling? It's the educational philosophy that we follow as a family with three kids. There are some (many? most?) things about it that are incredible, but there are also aspects that make life hard. In case you aren't familiar, here's a quick rundown. Unschooling is a child-led approach to education that emphasizes natural learning through life experiences, interests, and activities rather than following a structured curriculum. It's about trusting that children will learn what they need to know when they are ready and interested. What we love about it: ❤️ It really seems to foster a love of learning. 🧡 We are able to focus on skills like critical thinking, social and emotional intelligence, and consent and respect. 💛 It builds a lot of confidence and independence. 💚 Each kid is able to learn and live in the way that suits them. 💙 There is so much flexibility and freedom. Although super rewarding, it's a heavy load from the parenting perspective. It really requires a lot of intentional time and energy to help your kids pursue and deep dive into the many things that interest them. A while back, I posted about how my son Elliott wanted to create a business plan to get more voice-over work so that he can make enough money to buy a Gibson Les Paul. Maria Pendolino offered him a gratis business planning meeting. She even sent him homework before they met so that he would be prepared for the meeting. Now, I am pretty sure Maria was not unschooled, but the way she was with Elliott was incredible: 🔹 She was respectful and talked to him like she would an adult. 🔹 She had high expectations of him. 🔹 She helped him create manageable goals and a solid plan to reach them. 🔹 She taught him computer research skills, spreadsheet skills, and time management. 🔹 She gave him homework and helped him find ways to be respectful of his mom’s time! It was awesome. These are the things that make this kind of education work: people who are experts willing to take the time to help a kid they don’t know learn about the things they care about. Do I sound a little bit verklempt? I am. Parenting is really freaking hard. Having really amazing help carrying the load is an indescribable gift. #unschooling #businessplan
