Meanwhile, it's very much a part of human nature to seek similarities among phenomena rather than focusing on differences, laying the groundwork for change. Sometimes, this inclination is justified, especially when attempting such comparisons seems unimaginable. Take, for instance, the question: What similarities exist between Opera and Jazz? Instead of assuming there are none, consider how George #Gershwin made an attempt to reconcile these two genres with his creation, "Porgy and Bess." What makes "Porgy and Bess" somewhat similar to #jazz is its incorporation of jazz elements into the operatic form. Gershwin infused the score with blues, jazz, and spiritual influences, creating a uniquely American sound. The opera features syncopated rhythms, improvisational passages, and harmonic progressions reminiscent of jazz music. Additionally, the characters often sing in a conversational, idiomatic style that reflects the vernacular language of the time. While "Porgy and Bess" is not a traditional jazz work, its fusion of operatic and jazz elements makes it a notable example of how these two genres can intersect and influence each other. Mediator & Lawyer, NMA Civil/Commercial Mediator of the Year 2022/23 Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Member of the Civil Justice Council (CJC)
First a declaration of interest - I have tickets for Elbow on what is now scheduled (as I post) to be the opening night (proper) for the Co-op Live arena on 14 May!! Super excited and looking forward to seeing this brilliant band live in it's own back yard! Naturally, I have been watching with interest the developing story of the readiness of the arena not just from the perspective of a fan - but also as a #mediator and a #constructionlawyer. The arena will of course open 'soon'; gigs and concerts will happen for years to come and, over time, the current issues will be forgotten by most. But there is also the possibility, perhaps even likelihood, that the parties involved in developing the arena will now become embroiled in time consuming, unpredictable (?), adversarial and costly disputes about what happened, why and who pays - in addition to handling claims for cancelled shows and from disappointed fans. It will be interesting to see the mindset and approach taken by all stakeholders to resolve these issues. Blame and recrimination can be the instinctive human response in situations like this - and that is neither surprising nor something to criticise. And if that is the case here - well, it doesn't have to stay like that. I hope parties will be able to step back a little and give consideration to the value, benefits and opportunities of de-escalation and resolution through #conversation, #negotiation and #mediation. Adversarial processes will (hopefully) be options of last resort - but let's see?! Anyway, for now I can't wait for 14 May and being part of a 'Magnificent' night rocking-out with Elbow!!

Helping organizations develop capabilities to innovate successfully. Certified Innovation Manager, Organizational Development Strategist, Business Transformation Leader, Experienced Project Manager
Driving innovation within organizations can feel like running a marathon. It's been two months since I had the pleasure of participating in the Disrupt HR Bermuda 2.0 event. I've always seen myself as a passionate speaker rather than a public speaker. Despite being among the 75% of adults who fear public speaking, I decided to step out of my comfort zone. My passion for innovation pushed me to face this fear because innovation is all about venturing beyond what's comfortable. A heartfelt thank you to the Disrupt HR Bermuda Team: Felicia Rickards, Steph Brown, and Michelle St Jane 🌻🌎 for creating such an inspiring and supportive environment to face my discomfort. In the video below, I share endurance strategies to keep your teams engaged and focused on building their capabilities to innovate successfully while running the “innovation marathon.” 📹 https://lnkd.in/e5zsF4b7 If you missed the Disrupt HR Bermuda event, you can access the recordings and explore a wide range of thought-provoking topics from my fellow speakers. 📹 https://lnkd.in/eRp55EEe #DisruptHRBermuda #DisruptHR #Innovation #PublicSpeaking #ContinuousImprovement

I'm going to try to keep this momentum going. Besides, I'm nearly finished with the next record, and I need to keep up Continuing with the newest record SCHADENFREUDE, I'm jumping to track 10, Tradesman. When I approached this instrumental track for lyrical ideas, I knew it would be a little more upbeat and whimsical. It reminds me of Beck's style, And I did insert some sonic confectionary into it. Debit card noises, quips and the sides, and just silly ideas. The lyrics can be equally absurd in places, but there is a theme to it. Last year, I started submitting my tracks to streaming playlists for consideration. I have been successful in a couple instances, but by and large, I would get rejected for different reasons. It would usually be complementary on several aspects, with a "but, you don't fit our playlist". That was the impetus for starting this song, but it also made me think about my level of musicianship, and whether that plays a part. I have come a long way, vocally and in my guitar and bass playing, but I wouldn't consider myself a musician. I even struggle to use the word artist. While ruminating about this, I realize that I was a tradesmen, a guy who just put stuff together using his imagination. I enjoy doing the work, if there's an artistic statement that comes out of it, great. I have something to say, but I hate pretentious artist conceits. I just wanna results, I wanted to sound and feel like I'm hearing it in my head. When I spent more time agonizing over the stuff, it wasn't as fun, and it wasn't as good. I used to wonder how They Might Be Giants could do a song a day and post it. Or how South park King created 30 minute show within a week. Now I get it. That's the way I feel now about the process. Ego no longer gets in the way. Making the best music possible that I can. That's very liberating. No preconceptions, no expectations, no limitations. The song provides a good character sketch of who I am. Dreading the future, some of my life habits, and a summation. The final verse addresses some of the frustrations at attempting to be heard. In spite of that, I think it is the most lighthearted song on the record, kind of an outlier from the rest of the material. Perhaps it is maturity that has helped me avoid bitterness, and accept that things will happen as they will, not let it affect what I do and what I create, because it is who I am, and I cannot change that. I'm the digital plumber, I'm the virtual mechanic, and I'm the 8-bit trash man. https://lnkd.in/gUPew2Yk

Another great publication from property tax litigation attorney, Alex Mazero! Alex discusses his insights about the significance of economic obsolescence and its impact on the market value of certain properties.
The COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc on many industries, especially the cinema industry. Pursuing property tax reduction is a surefire way to save money and at the very least, assist in keeping cinema doors open for business. Knowing what critical factors affect a cinema’s market value is incumbent for a successful appeal. Among the most important is obsolescence, which is often overlooked or at times, entirely disregarded during assessment and tax appeal. This article highlights the profound effect obsolescence has on the market value of cinemas and the importance of consideration during assessment and tax appeal. Ryan Law’s Alex Mazero discusses this topic in the March Edition Headnotes by the Dallas Bar Association. https://lnkd.in/gHmcCHyF
