A common experience I have had. I go to a conference about health tech. I get coffee and go to a talk. I hear about a new technology that is going to save me/patients/someone else an enormous amount of time. I get another coffee and go into another talk. I hear about a new technology that is going to save me/patients/someone else an enormous amount of time. This repeats a few more times. At the end of the day, I am thinking we are all going to have saved so much time we won't know what to do with ourselves. On the way home, I pop in to see my friend who works in a local NHS trust. We pop into his office and he switches on his computer. He says: “The computer usually takes ages to boot up. So let's grab a coffee. Probably not a quick one.” There is a gap between rhetoric and reality in health tech. At BMJ Future Health we are trying to bridge that gap - the one between problems and solutions. We believe the best advances in health come from a true understanding of the challenges faced by patients, health professionals and the wider system at the point of need - or preferably before. So I am really looking forward to the session on problems. And a deep analysis of problems. And fewer facile solutions or overpromising about technologies that are going to solve all our problems and save us time. But a few will probably squeeze in somehow. There will still be coffee.
