The Real Dangers Of Overcrowding #events hashtag #planning hashtag #people hashtag The San Francisco Golden Gate bridge was opened to the public in 1937, May was the bridge 87th anniversary. I recall I happened to be visiting San Francisco in 1987 the bridges 50th anniversary, and was among the first of many to cross from the City when it opened around 6am that day. I recall some enthusiastic party revelers had already jumped the barriers earlier that morning, and had made their way across. The 1.6 km walk over the bridge from SF City towards Marin County was initially very orderly, and really quite uneventful, but all became very different on my return. During my walk back around 9am thousands of people had began to swell the bridge from SF City, and were met by thousands of people like myself returning. By late morning the bridge had become totally grid locked, and a very dangerous situation suddenly evolved. By midday the bridge had swelled to approximately 300,000, and according to news reports the following day, the suspension bridge spans had actually flattened & dropped due to the weight of so many people. After the bridge finally cleared in the early afternoon news reports that there were a number of injuries. but no one actually died, thank goodness, which was truly amazing due to the circumstances. I recall at one point a SF Police Motor Cyclist slowly manuvoired his white Harley Davison through the crowd back towards the city with a snake of walkers attached to the back, which I thought was quite clever of some people at the time. Many lessons I'm sure were learned on that day, by SF Emergency Services & Organizers, especially controlling crowding, and emergency planning for these types of events. No one Im sure on the planning committee could have envisioned what actually occurred. Certainly advanced planning for events to prevent over overcrowding is so critical & always the best approach. There are many annual events around the world such as New Year's Eve celebrations, Public demonstrations, sporting events & open air events where controls, and advanced planning to prevent overcrowding must always be kept Top of Mind. This became very pertinent to myself years later during the New Years Eve fire at the Address Hotel in Dubai. Clive Hamdorff Regional Security & Risk Consultant Japan. https://lnkd.in/ezprqaQt

CEO of Snuggle Hunny | Founder of Flora & Fauna and Green + Kind | No 1 in Ecomm 2021 & 2019 I Building Better Brands and Businesses
A wonderful few days in Vegas at a baby expo. Coming from Aus I ordered some furniture online in the US and had it shipped to the event. Wonderfully, the event had teamed up with Delivering Good who happily took a table and cot off my hands and got it to families in need - they have delivered over $3bn of goods to people in need over the last 40 years. Not sure if any events/ expos in Aus are doing this but if not, it’s a huge win win for everyone. Having looked at a few reports, expos generate around 1-2kg waste per day per person. Can we reduce this eg do we need lanyards, can we stop bottled water etc. I’m not an expert in events but assume we can do a lot. We can’t make them perfect, and people like me travel around the world to do them, but being better is a huge step forward. #expos #conferences

The Imagination Collaborative: To create a legacy of human connection through epic experiences that transcend expectations, blending creativity and cutting-edge technology | 35 Years In Live Events
Like a surfer trying not to get slammed by the next wave, if you are planning an event at an outdoor space in the city, you need to: identify your impact zone - the area that is affected by your event. 9 questions to help you determine this are: (1) How are my guests going to arrive? (2) Where's the public transportation? (3) Where's the parking? (4) What is my Zonex? (the space between parking/public transport and the venue) (5) Where are the emergency services? (6) Where are the local facilities? (7) What emergency gathering space are you occupying? (8) What are the businesses around the venue and what impact will we have on them? (9) What other events are happening nearby on the same date? Putting in the work to determine your impact zone ahead of time will pay off big time leading up to the event and throughout the event itself. Bonus: The local community will thank you! You want to ride your event wave effortlessly, not get sucked into it, run out of air and get spat out on the other side. What other questions can you ask yourself to help you determine the impact zone of your event?

Focus on one thing at a time… Two years ago, we hosted a 60-person event on a helicopter pad overlooking the city of Los Angeles. It was one of the coolest things I have ever done. Alexander Sasha Solonin, my co-founder, and I were overlooking the view after the event, asking each other, "How are we ever going to beat this event?" What we concluded was that, no matter what, we have to always focus on one event at a time. How can we make each event better than the last? Two years later, we find ourselves on the BIGGEST rooftop in North America, right across the street with 450 people. As I look back now, I see how crazy hectic the journey has been. Along the way, we had events where only one person showed up. But we stayed consistent and treated that one person with the same energy we would treat a thousand. The journey has just begun... Trade Show Marketing Consultant | Schulich MMKG Alum | Elevating Small Business Success at Trade Shows, Conferences, and Expos.
Know your escape routes! Have you ever run a trade show booth and had no idea how to get your on-hand booth materials out of the event floor? I certainly have... When running a booth at the Toronto Metro Convention Centre, my partner and I made the mistake of paying for parking, blocks down from the convention center. For one reason or another, we walked our materials down the street rather than bring the car up and pack everything in on Front St. I have no idea why we did this, and it made things way more difficult than they had to be. While I always advocate for having a teardown and exit plan, sometimes you just need to improvise if you are not used to the convention center you are exhibiting at. Do you have any after-expo horror stories? Comment down below and share your nightmare experiences at the end of an in-person marketing event. #ExpoMarketing #TradeShow #ExperientialMarketing

Feeling very inspired after Tuesday night's Salon Canberra event ‘Enhancing Communities through Infrastructure, Placemaking and Public Art’. The beautiful theatrette at the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia was completely full. Thank you to Catherine Carter for providing this opportunity. There were many takeaways from the panel that stuck with me, but my favourite was from Nikos Kalogeropoulos: We are creating fewer reasons to step into the public realm. We create bigger, more elaborate homes, with home gyms, home theatres etc. We drive from these ultra-comfortable homes straight to our sterile, climate-controlled offices and then home again. And yet, so often are the memorable moments made elsewhere, in the public realm. In the spaces between destinations. This was a thought-provoking moment for me, that something seemingly trivial can have a huge impact on the community and its engagement. We need to include art and the public realm in our daily lives. How much beauty and culture do we miss? How many moments of connection do we simply, subconsciously, refuse to experience?
