Why are more U.S. composters starting to accept food scraps and certified compostable packaging? The Composting Consortium, managed by Closed Loop Partners' Center for the Circular Economy, dives deep in an interview with two leading composters, SYED DONG of Black Earth Compost and Nathan Reinbold of Glacial Ridge Composting Facility, owned and operated by Pope/Douglas Solid Waste Management, who share on-the-ground insights on how food scraps & compostable packaging collection is improving their business—and offer words of advice to fellow composters. Read on to learn more about what it takes to recover food scraps and compostable packaging in a way that brings value to the organics stream, and opportunities to increase acceptance at composting facilities: https://hubs.la/Q031hWRJ0 #circulareconomy #organics #compost #composting #compostablepackaging #packaging #interview #compostable #food #foodwaste

Great read from Closed Loop Partners! There's about 5,000 commercial composting facilities in the US, and 90% of them don't accept food waste or packaging. This really limits access to composting systems as well as recovery of compostable resources. We need to increase the number of composters that accept food waste and compostable packaging.

A Hidden Problem in Composting is Non-Compostable Stickers and Labels. 🧐 When we think about composting, we often focus on the big picture—food waste, organic materials, and the environment. 🌍 But there's a hidden problem that disrupts the entire composting process: Non-compostable Adhesive Label Stickers on produce and packaging. 🍎 These are known as 'PLU stickers' in the grocery industry for doing a product look-up at the checkout register. 🛒 These small stickers can cause significant contamination, making it harder for composters to create quality compost. ♻️ Contamination from stickers is real. It affects acceptance of food waste by composters globally. France passed a law to require all produce to have compostable stickers only. 🇫🇷 It’s time we address this issue head-on in USA. 🇺🇲 For a deeper dive into the scourge of produce stickers, read more at this link: https://lnkd.in/gETwaYC7 #Sustainability #Composting #CompostablePackaging

At Double O Organics, we’re dedicated to making a positive environmental impact, especially when it comes to handling expired food products. Here’s what we do: 🔄 Depackaging and Composting: We depackage expired food products, separating organic materials from their packaging. This organic waste is then composted, transforming potential landfill waste into nutrient-rich compost that nurtures healthy soil and plant growth. ♻ Minimizing Waste: Our focus on depackaging and composting significantly reduces the waste that ends up in landfills. 🌱 Promoting Practical Resource Management: We’re committed to efficient practices that reduce waste and make the most of our natural resources. If you’re interested in learning more about our approach or how we can work together, we’d love to hear from you. Compostables know that there is a major opportunity to get more valuable food scraps to the composter. Compostables know that it's the greenwashing look-alikes that are harming the integrity of certified compostable technology. Compostables know that certified packaging contributes to food security in the global supply food chain. Compostables know that reusables rock and are a preferred solution in certain situations. Compostables know that consumers want to use them because its easier to green bin it than to scrape and separate. Compostables know that some composters accept us, some think we are part of the contamination problem. I know these things about #compostables at least. I also know that I want us to stop wasting, today. I always say there's no time to waste, but not everyone is willing to change their behaviour fast enough. The Composting Consortium, an industry collaboration led by the Center for the Circular Economy at Closed Loop Partners, released its "Don't Spoil the Soil: The Challenge of Contamination at Composting Sites" report at the end of February, which includes first-of-its-kind data on the amount of contamination at U.S. composting facilities. Eight out of nine composters who accept compostable products in the study had no detectable amounts of compostable packaging in their finished compost. Although this study isn't reflective of the complete landscape, it is a step in the right direction to continue future studies. We're paying attention to what works, and can see what doesn't. Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/gq_CzpHJ All this to say, we are in a transition toward zero waste. Compostable products aim to bring us from mass pollution mode to a more thoughtful, regenerative mode of practice. Congrats Caroline Barry on this report, I love watching your work unfold. I know that I am proud to work for EcoSafe Zero Waste, a Canadian company making strides across North America to ensure we are helping composters, not ruining and adding extra costs to them. Mind you, we don't supply food service ware, but we do manufacture the best compostable bag out there. #30daycompostchallenge #30c #compostiscool #makecompostmainstream #compost

Are you being Greenwashed? Tons of food service items we use today labeled "compostable". But, are they truly compostable without causing contamination to our planet? The answer is NO! Majority of those items require to be processed in industrial composting facilities, which aren't widely available, and may not break down completely, leaving residues. Items labeled "HOME COMPOSTABLE” are generally safer, as they break down in typical backyard compost conditions without contamination. The company we represent, Lastic (Canada) Corporation, we only make food service items that are home compostable certified and safe to be mixed and processed with organic wastes without causing contamination. We would love to partner with the most ambitious companies that recognize the importance of leading your industry in making authentic changes to help clean up our planet.
